WDFW Employment Help

Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions.

Where do I find job postings for WDFW and other agencies?

The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife announces its employment opportunities on this website. We recruit for a wide variety of positions, including professional biologists, scientific technicians, fish hatchery personnel, fish and wildlife enforcement officers, computer, office, and administrative personnel. Opportunities include permanent, full and part-time, and non-permanent (temporary) openings. All of our openings are listed. If you are interested in one of these opportunities, you should apply directly to us, as described in the specific recruitment announcement. For more information about the Department of Fish and Wildlife, go to http://wdfw.wa.gov/about.

The Department of Personnel also maintains a recruiting website at www.careers.wa.gov. This website allows you to search and apply for jobs in a variety of other state agencies. Go to http://hr.dop.wa.gov/geninfo/aboutdop.htm for more information.

How does the application process work?

When you access an opportunity on our website, you will see a “recruitment announcement.” This is a notification indicating applications will be accepted for a specific job opening. Each announcement has a recruitment number, which is found in the upper left of the announcement. Usually, the announcement has an opening and closing date for receipt of applications. Following the closing date, applications are screened for qualifications and competencies, and the best-qualified applicants are referred for further consideration. Sometimes we recruit on an “until filled” basis. This means that applications will be considered as they are received, interviews conducted, and the position filled as soon as we have a well-qualified candidate. Recruitment announcements contain all the information needed to apply for a position, such as the job classification and title, desired competencies and qualifications, location of the position, and how to apply. Be sure to read the announcement carefully.

Do I have to fill out a Washington State Employment Application for the position I am interested in?

The recruitment announcement for the position will indicate whether you need to fill out a State Application. Please read the instructions carefully in the “How to Apply” section of the announcement. If you have questions about the recruitment process, you can also contact the recruiter listed on the announcement.

What is a “job specification?”

The duties, competencies, and qualifications for an open position are listed on the recruitment announcement. That is the information you will need when applying for a specific opening. However, the Department of Personnel also publishes job class specifications, which are general descriptions covering all positions within a broad job classification. Job class specifications include a definition of the job class and a general list of duties. They provide an excellent way for you to learn more about the work performed by certain types of positions in state service.
