Not all deer die, but when they loose a significant amount of hair they can die from hypothermia (loss of body heat) caused by cold wet weather of winter.
Report a Deer Hair-Loss Sighting

Fawns from previous year are more susceptible than adults.

You can see where the deer has lost hair along the ribs and rump

Hair color first starts to turn color(yellow then white) before it falls out.

Deer on Indian Island have been hit particulary hard with the hair loss syndrome
