Q: Why switch the licensing year from January 1-December 31, to April 1-March 31 of the following year?

A: The new licensing cycle better corresponds with the fishing and hunting seasons.

Q: What are Washington hunting and fishing license residency requirements?

A: A person who has maintained a permanent place of abode within this state for a least 90 days immediately preceding the purchase of a license, has established by formal evidence an intent to continue to reside in this state, and who is not licensed to hunt or fish as a resident in another state may purchase a resident license. Only a Washington Driver's License, Identification Card, school identification card, employment card, or an active duty Military Identification Card will be accepted as proof of residency.

Q: What do I do if I lose my license or tags?

A: You may replace lost licenses or tags at any authorized license dealer. The cost is $10 per license or tag or the cost of the item, whichever is less.

Q: Can I get a refund on my license or tags?

A: Refunds may be authorized under certain circumstances. Write to the License Division at 600 Capitol Way North or visit 1111 Washington Street SE, 1st Floor, Olympia. License Division needs the original(s) of the document(s) involved and an explanation for the refund request. If a refund is approved, the original document(s) must be surrendered before the refund can be processed. Refunds are not authorized for all requests.

Q. Can I use department facilities if I don't have a hunting or fishing license?

A. Under current law, a person 16 years of age or older who wishes to use department lands or access facilities and who does not already have a hunting, fishing, trapping, or free license from the department must purchase a $10 Vehicle User Permit. A spouse, children under 18 years of age, and youth groups may use department lands and access facilities without possessing their own licenses if they are accompanied by a license holder. A violation of this licensing requirement is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of $500 or up to 90 days in the county jail or both.

Q: How much is a fishing license and where can I buy one?

A: Check out the fee schedule or call the Licensing Division at (360) 902-2464. You can buy a license online at the WDFW Online Sales and Services website. You may also purchase a license at any of the more than 600 locations throughout the state, including many sporting goods stores, marinas, convenience stores, and major retailers.

Q: What types of fish do I need a license to catch?

A: You need a license to fish for everything but albacore tuna, carp, crayfish and smelt. You also need a shellfish license to take anything classified under state shellfish regulations, including sea cucumbers, seaweed, and even squid. Check the latest for exact instructions.

Hunting

Q: How do I get a hunting license and how much does it cost?

A: The type of hunting license you need depends on the species you intend to hunt. For instance, if you hunt deer, you need to purchase a big game license for deer. Transport tags for big game are included in the purchase price of the license. Check out the fee schedule or call the License Division at (360) 902-2464. If you hunt multiple species, you can save money by purchasing all of your hunting privileges at the same time. You can buy your hunting license online at the WDFW Online Sales and Services website. You may also purchase a license at any of the more than 600 locations throughout the state, including sporting goods stores, convenience stores, and major sports retailers. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1972, is required to complete an approved Hunter Education class to be eligible for a hunting license.

Q: Do I pay the full price for a small game license if I've already purchased a big game package?

A: No. You may purchase a reduced fee small game license with proof of a big game license purchase.

Q: Do I need a hunting license to target shoot?

A: No. You do not need a hunting permit for target practice or skeet.
