Spotted Ratfish
Hydrolagus colliei

Caught incidentally by commercial and recreational fishermen.

Description: Large rabbitlike head, long tapering body. Prominent lateral line canals on unscaled slippery skin. Large spine at front of short 1st dorsal fin. Male has clublike appendage on forehead. Eye green. Pectoral fin large, triangular, with a fleshy base. Silvery or brownish, often with iridescent shadings of gold, green, and blue; has white spots on back. Caudal and dorsal fins dark-edged.

Size: To 96 cm (38 inches)

Range/Habitat: Southeast Alaska to Baja and northern Gulf of California. Common off B.C. to northern California. Near bottom; close inshore from Washington northward, deeper southward. To 2,995 feet (913 m).
