Commonly caught by commercial and recreational fishermen.

Description: Spine at front of each dorsal fin, no anal fin. Snout long, flattened, pointed. Teeth in both jaws are flat with sharp edges, forming a continuous cutting edge. Gray to light brown above; white below. White spots on side (except in some adults).

Size: To 160 cm (5¼ feet), most adults 61-122 cm (2-4 feet); larger in northern part of range.

Range/Habitat: All temperate and northern seas, but no in tropics; Alaska to central Baja. Coastal. Very common in shallow bays from Alaska to central California; in south apparently deeper.
