Columbia River Compact / Joint State Action Notice

THE FOLLOWING SEASONS FOR DEEP RIVER WERE MODIFIED:

The Compact extended the winter season in Deep River. This action results in three additional fishing periods on the evenings of March 16, 23 and 30. All other regulations remain in place.

The Joint staff also reminds commercial fisherman that biological sampling of all landed catch is required, as indicated in the “Additional Regulations” section of the following table.

Deep River Select Area
Winter Season: Monday nights from February 16 through March 10, and March 16- 31, 2009
Open hours are from 7 PM to 7 AM (12 hours)
Spring Season: Sunday and Wednesday nights from April 15 through April 30.
Open hours are 7 PM to 7 AM (12 hours).
Area: Deep River fishing area from the markers at USCG navigation marker #16 upstream to the Highway 4 Bridge (all concurrent water)
Gear: 7-inch minimum mesh size restriction during the winter season and
8-inch maximum mesh size restriction during the spring season.

Nets restricted to 100 fathoms in length with no weight restriction on leadline. Use of additional weights or anchors attached directly to the leadline is allowed. Nets cannot be tied off to stationary structures. Nets may not fully cross navigation channel.

Allowable Sales: Salmon, shad, and white sturgeon (43-54 inches in fork length). A maximum of 5 white sturgeon may be possessed or sold by each participating vessel during each calendar week (Sunday through Saturday) that the fishery is open
Additional Regulations: Transportation or possession of fish outside the fishing area (except to the sampling station) is unlawful until WDFW staff has biologically sampled individual catches.

After sampling, fishers will be issued a transportation permit by agency staff.

During the winter season arrangements must be made with Jeremy Wilson at 360-795-0319 for the place and time of sampling.

In the spring season a sampling station will be established downstream of the Highway 4 Bridge at Stephen’s dock.

TREATY INDIAN WINTER COMMERCIAL SEASON:

Treaty Indian Winter Season
Effective 6:00 PM Friday March 6, 2009, the ongoing gillnet fishery in The Dalles and the John Day Pools are closed.

The area remains open for platform and hook and line as follows:

Season: 6 PM March 6 through 6 PM March 21 2009
Area: The Dalles and John Day Pools
Gear Hoop nets, dip bag nets, and rod and reel with hook and line.
Allowable Sales Steelhead, walleye, carp, and shad, catfish bass and yellow perch.
Sturgeon between 43-inches and 54-inches may not be sold, but may be retained for subsistence purposes.
Quick Reporting 24-hour Quick Reporting Rule in effect for Washington buyers.

  • The Bonneville Pool and the Yakama Nation fishery below Bonneville Dam is currently open only for platform and hook and line fisheries as described in the February 13 Action Notice.

Treaty-Indian Winter Season
Effective 6:00 PM Saturday March 21, 2009 sales of platform and hook and line caught fish will not be allowed in all of Zone 6 and in the Yakama Nation fishery below Bonneville Dam.

  • This action effectively discontinues sales of all fish from platform hook and line fisheries in all areas in anticipation of upcoming ceremonial permit fisheries.
