Columbia River Compact / Joint State Action Notice

Joint State staff met today to discuss sturgeon sport fisheries in the area Above Wauna and Below Wauna. The results are listed below.

ABOVE WAUNA STURGEON SPORT FISHERY |

Open for retention Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only (4 days/week)
August 1 - September 30, 2008
|
Area: |
True north/south line through Light #50 near the mouth of the Sandy River upstream to the commercial fishing boundary near Beacon Rock.
|
Gear: |
Mainstem Columbia River from the Wauna powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam, all adjacent Washington tributaries, and the lower Willamette River upstream to Willamette Falls, including Multnomah Channel.
|
Misc.: |
42-inch minimum size limit.
Retention of green sturgeon prohibited as per permanent regulations.

BELOW WAUNA STURGEON SPORT FISHERY WAS MODIFIED |
| The retention of white sturgeon in the 2008 recreational sturgeon fishery downstream of the Wauna powerlines is prohibited effective 12:01 AM, Sunday July 27.
This action rescinds the retention fishery previously adopted for Sunday, July 27.

Future Hearings
No additional Compact/Joint State hearings are currently scheduled. The Joint Staff anticipates the need for a Compact hearing in mid-August via teleconference to discuss additional non-Indian mainstem commercial fishing opportunities.

Sanctuaries: |
Standard river mouth and dam sanctuaries applicable to these gear types remain in effect. The Spring Creek Hatchery Sanctuary is not necessary this time of year.

Allowable Sales: |
Chinook, coho, sockeye, steelhead, walleye, carp, and shad may be sold or retained for subsistence. Sturgeon may not be sold. Sturgeon between 4-5 feet in length in The Dalles and John Day pools may be retained for subsistence. Sturgeon between 42-60 inches in the Bonneville Pool may also be retained for subsistence.

Expected catch: |
1,000 Chinook, minimal sockeye and approximately 1,000 steelhead.

- Sales of Platform Hook and line caught fish in Zone 6 will continue as previously adopted
- Commercial sales of fish caught in Yakama Nation's Zone 6 tributary fisheries will continue as previously adopted.
- Commercial sales of platform/ hook and line caught fish landed in the Yakama Nation subsistence fishery immediately below Bonneville Dam will continue. This fishery is located on the Washington shoreline from 600 feet below the fish ladder at the Bonneville Dam north-shore powerhouse downstream to Beacon Rock (bank fishing only) and is open to Yakama Tribal members only. Sales of fish coincide with Zone 6 sales with the exception of sturgeon, which may NOT be retained for sale or subsistence purposes, consistent with the 2007 MOA between Washington State and Yakama Nation.
Future Hearings
- The Treaty tribes may recommend a future Compact hearing to set fall season fisheries that may begin the week of August 18.
