Columbia River Compact / Joint State Action Notice

THE FOLLOWING COLUMBIA RIVER SEASONS WERE SET:

2006 COMMERCIAL SALMON FISHERY

DATES:

7:00 PM Thursday June 29 through 5:00 AM Friday June 30
7:00 PM Wednesday July 5 through 5:00 AM Thursday July 6
Note: The July 5 fishing period was adopted on June 15

AREA:

Zones 1-5

SANCTUARIES:

Grays River, Elokomin-A, Cowlitz River, Kalama-A, Lewis-A, Washougal and Sandy River.

GEAR:

8-inch minimum and 9 ž-inch maximum mesh size restriction.

ALLOWABLE SALES:

Chinook, coho, sturgeon and shad. All sockeye and steelhead must be immediately released. A maximum of three sturgeon total (white or green) may be possessed or sold by each participating vessel during each calendar week (Sunday through Saturday) that the fishery is open. The sturgeon possession/sales limit includes only mainstem fisheries, as Select Area commercial fisheries are closed for sturgeon retention.

MISCELLANEOUS RULES:

Effective July 7 retention of Green Sturgeon will be prohibited in Mainstem and Select Area Fisheries until further notice.

Washington buyers are required to send a report of their landings to WDFW by 10AM on the day after the purchase date by either:
a) FAX transmission to (360) 906-6776 or (360) 906-6777
b) E-mail to crfishtickets@dfw.wa.gov
c) Telephone to 1-866-791-1281

A Joint State hearing is scheduled for June 29 at 11AM via teleconference to review the ongoing Chinook sport fishery below Bonneville Dam.
A Columbia River Compact/Joint State hearing will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday July 6 via teleconference to discuss additional commercial fishing periods and update ongoing fisheries.
A Columbia River Compact will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday July 27 located at 25 River St in Cathlamet, Washington 98612.

A Compact/Joint State hearing took place today to review summer Chinook stock status and Columbia River fisheries. The results are listed below.

BELOW BONNEVILLE SUMMER CHINOOK SPORT FISHERY

No action was taken, the fishery remains open; however, a Joint State hearing is scheduled for Thursday June 29 to again review the fishery and summer Chinook stock status at which time management action may be taken.

ESTUARY STURGEON SPORT FISHERY

No action taken on this fishery; the fishery will remain open through July 4 as scheduled.
Joint staff will review final catch and consider additional fishing opportunity if the data allows.
Joint State hearing will likely be scheduled the week of July 10.

JOHN DAY POOL STURGEON SPORT FISHERY

Action was taken on this fishery; the fishery will close effective 12:01 AM Saturday July 1.
Harvest guideline of 165 sturgeon is projected to be reached by June 30.

GREEN STURGEON RETENTION IN COMMERCIAL FISHERIES

Effective July 7, 2006 retention of green sturgeon will be prohibited in all Columbia River mainstem and Select Area commercial fisheries until further notice.
Green sturgeon will be ESA-listed as threatened and non-retention is consistent with the green sturgeon biological assessment submitted to NIMFS.

A Joint State hearing is schedule for 11:00 AM Thursday June 29 via teleconference to discuss the ongoing Chinook sport fishery below Bonneville Dam.

A Compact/Joint State hearing is scheduled for 2:00 PM Thursday July 6, 2006 via teleconference to review fisheries and stock status.

Compact is scheduled for at 10:00 AM Thursday July 27, 2006 located at 25 River St in Cathlamet, Washington 98612.
