Ringold
Steelhead
An estimated 729 steelhead were caught in March between the Hwy 395 bridge
in the Tri-cities and the old Hanford town site (Catch Record Card Area
535). Catch consisted of 336 adipose+right ventral fin clip, 370 adipose
only clip, and 23 unclipped steelhead. Of these, 453 hatchery steelhead
were harvested. Anglers averaged 4.5 pole hours per steelhead. WDFW staff
sampled 22% of the total effort. Angler effort for March was estimated at
3,365 hours.
Catch, harvest, and effort was above average for March. Effective April
1, the Ringold area steelhead fishery will be restricted to "bank fishing
only" to reduce impacts to ESA listed spring chinook. The boundary
area for the bank fishery is from the WDFW marker ¼ mile downstream
of the Ringold irrigation wasteway outlet to the marker ½ mile upstream
of Spring Creek. The fishery will be open through April 15. In April 2008,
anglers averaged one steelhead per 2.7 hours of fishing. I would expect
similar success this April.
