The Ringold area steelhead fishery opened Oct 1 in the Hanford Reach. Anglers may retain Ringold Springs Hatchery origin steelhead caught between the Highway 395 bridge (Tri-cities) and the wooden powerline towers at the old Hanford townsite. These steelhead have both the adipose and right ventral fins clipped. All adipose only clipped and wild steelhead must be released unharmed. During the week, 540 anglers were interviewed (163 bank anglers & 377 boat anglers). Anglers reported catching 44 steelhead and 108 chinook. Bank anglers averaged 16 hours per steelhead and 179 hours per chinook. Boat anglers did much better on chinook (24 hours/chinook) but averaged 228 hours per steelhead. Steelhead returns to Ringold are expected to be relatively low in 2006 (<2,000 steelhead).
