RATIONALE

The spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) is one of the most abundant of shark species in the world. It has supported commercial fisheries in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans but signs of overexploitation have now appeared in some locations. This has generated interest in the ecology, conservation, and recovery of dogfish species. Thus, it is timely that the latest information and expertise be collected and examined. This symposium will seek recommendations for management actions to foster the recovery of depleted populations, as well as measures to conserve the species and to sustain fisheries in the future. Since semi-tropical fisheries on dogfish frequently capture Mustellus species, the symposium will feature a special section to examine similarities and fishery potential for these species in developing countries.
