Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
2009 Washington Triploid Trout Distribution
Approved by the Fish & Wildlife Commission
March 20, 2009

Ninety-four lakes throughout the state will be stocked with triploid trout weighing an average 1-½ pound each.  These trout, purchased by WDFW from a contracted private grower, are sterile rainbows that are voracious feeders and have the potential to grow to trophy size if not harvested the first season after stocking, and if sufficient forage is easily available.

Triploid plants are one of the components of the overall stocking program, and the District fish biologists use them in the mix of fry plants, catchables, triploids, and WDFW ‘jumbos’ depending on the specific circumstances of each lake, and the availability of hatchery fish.

A total of 35,336 triploid trout will be stocked in April, and as close to the April 25 lowland lakes fishing season opener as possible.  Later in May, twenty-nine lakes will receive additional triploid plants, bringing the total stocking of triploids to 41,429 fish.  There are 767 fewer triploids available in 2009 due to increased cost to the Department.

The list of lakes proposed for stocking is similar to the 2008 plan, with a few changes to enhance fishing opportunities, and to augment lakes that were rehabilitated last fall.
