Sport Sampling Summaries

Salmon/Steelhead:

Cowlitz River - 14 bank anglers kept 1 steelhead while 4 bank anglers had no catch.

The adult fish ladder and collection system at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery was opened and fished for five days last week. During the past week Tacoma Power personnel recovered 53 coho salmon adults and six winter-run steelhead.

Tacoma Power employees released 48 coho salmon adults and four winter-run steelhead into the upper Cowlitz River at the Lake Scanewa Day Use Site and five coho salmon adults and two winter-run steelhead into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 6,660 cubic feet per second on Tuesday, February 17

Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream - 3 bank anglers and 1 boat/1 boat angler in the Vancouver area had no catch as did 3 bank anglers in Kalama.

Wind and Klickitat rivers and Drano Lake spring chinook 2008 actual returns and 2009 forecasts:

  • Wind River - 2008 forecast was 10,000 adults; actual return 3,200. 2009 forecast is 6,900 adults.
  • Drano Lake - 2008 forecast was 36,800 adults; actual return 7,700. 2009 forecast is 9,600 adults.
  • Klickitat River - 2008 forecast was 1,100 adults; actual return 1,000. 2009 forecasts is 2,000 adults.

Sturgeon

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - 5 bank anglers just below Bonneville Dam had no catch.

Trout

Klineline Pond - 93 bank anglers kept 86 rainbows. 2,000 almost half-pound rainbows were planted Feb. 9.

Other plants of catchable size rainbows Feb. 9-10:

  • Fort Borst Park Pond in Chehalis - 3,068 fish;
  • Silver Lake in Castle Rock - 2,105 fish;
  • Battleground Lake - 2,000 fish

Smelt

Cowlitz River - Confirmed reports of smelt in the Cowlitz! A commercial fisher landed 2,000 pounds during the last Sunday (Feb. 15) fishery. In addition, lot of birds observed on the lower river yesterday. Prospects look good for this Saturday's sport fishery.
