Salmon/Steelhead -
Kalama River - For the week of March 23-29: 121 bank anglers kept 4 summer and 2 winter hatchery steelhead plus 2 hatchery spring chinook and released 2 hatchery and 12 wild steelhead. 51 boat anglers kept 4 summer and 1 winter hatchery steelhead plus 1 hatchery spring chinook and released 10 wild steelhead.
Wind River - Effort and catch is increasing. Last Saturday morning (April 5), about 50 boats were counted there. Majority of the catch is still 5 year-olds with some fish pushing 30 pounds plus.
Drano Lake - Effort and catch is increasing. 26 boats counted here Saturday morning (April 5). Majority of the catch is still 5 year-olds with some fish pushing 30 pounds plus.
White Salmon River - Some spring chinook are being caught by bank anglers fishing at the mouth.
Klickitat River - Some spring chinook are being caught.
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Effort and catch is increasing. On Friday April 4, a total of 1,200 boats and 958 bank anglers were counted from Bonneville Dam downstream to the mouth. On Saturday April 5, over 2,200 boats and over 1,400 bank anglers were counted from Bonneville Dam downstream to Skamokawa.
From Tuesday April 1 through Saturday April 5, we sampled nearly 2,000 salmonid anglers. Including fish released, bank anglers averaged a chinook per every 5.9 rods while boat anglers averaged one per every 3.1 rods. We sampled 530 fish caught of which 60% were hatchery fish. 55% of the fish kept were of upriver origin.
The mainstem Columbia from Buoy 10 upstream to the I-5 Bridge is open to fishing for hatchery chinook, hatchery steelhead, and shad on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays only until further notice. Fishing for salmon, steelhead, and shad is closed until further notice from the I-5 Bridge upstream to Bonneville Dam.
7,455 adult spring chinook were counted at Bonneville Dam yesterday (Sunday April 6). To date, 37,703 adult spring chinook have been counted.
ODFW and WDFW will have a checkpoint tomorrow (Tuesday April 8) to update impacts associated with the mainstem sport spring chinook fishery. At 2 PM Tuesday April 15, ODFW and WDFW will have a telephone conference call to update the spring chinook stock status, review the mainstem sport fishery, and consider modifications to the sport fishery.
Bonneville Pool - No in-sample catch of spring chinook has been observed to date in the open area from the Tower Island powerlines (located about 6 miles downstream from The Dalles Dam) to the upstream boundaries.
The Dalles Pool - Including fish released, bank anglers averaged a spring chinook per every 3.9 rods last week. No in-sample salmonid catch was observed for boat anglers last week.
John Day Pool - Including fish released, bank anglers averaged nearly 3/4 steelhead per rod last week. No in-sample salmonid catch was observed for boat anglers last week.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - No effort was observed last week. Catch and release only from the Wauna powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam.
Bonneville Pool - Including legals released, boat anglers averaged ½ fish per rod last week. Slow for bank anglers.
The Dalles Pool - Bank anglers are catching some legals.
John Day Pool - Boat anglers are catching some legals. Slow for bank anglers.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers are catching some bass. No in-sample effort for walleye was observed last week.
The Dalles Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged ½ walleye per rod. Light effort for bass.
John Day Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a walleye per every 5.5 rods and nearly a bass per rod last week. Light effort and catches from the bank.
Trout -
Plants of catchable size rainbows last week:
Lake Sacajawea in Longview - 3,300 fish
Silver Lake near Castle Rock - 2,170 fish
Swofford Pond near Mossyrock - 3,500 fish
Klineline Pond - Still producing a mixture of rainbows and browns. Last week, bank anglers averaged 1.6 fish per rod, counting fish released.
