Salmon/steelhead -

Drano Lake - Effort and catch is increasing. Including fish released, boat anglers averaged ½ steelhead per rod. 63% of the steelhead caught were kept. Some summer chinook are also being caught.

White Salmon River - Effort and catch is increasing here too. Some summer chinook and steelhead are being caught. About 40 water craft were observed Sunday (August 6) morning.

Klickitat River - Drift boat anglers are catching some summer run steelhead. Some good catches were reported during the week.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Last week we sampled 316 salmonid anglers (including 70 boats) with 2 adult fall chinook, 78 steelhead, and 1 sea run cutthroat. The chinook were sampled at the mouth of the Cowlitz; steelhead were caught throughout the river. Overall, bank anglers averaged a steelhead kept/released per every 5 rods and boat anglers one per every 3 rods based on mainly incomplete and complete trips, respectively. 82% of the steelhead caught were kept.

Recent summer run steelhead counts at Bonneville Dam are near the 10-year average. From August 1-6, a total of 26,000 fish (including a yearly high of 5,853 yesterday) had been counted at the dam or 85% of the recent 10-year average of 30,669 fish for that period. However, cumulative steelhead counts since July 1 are still only 65% of the recent 10-year average.
