Salmon/Steelhead

Grays River - No report on angling success. Mainstem Grays from Hwy. 4 Bridge to South Fork and West Fork from mouth to hatchery intake/foot bridge opens to fishing for hatchery steelhead Saturday December 15.

Cowlitz River - No report on angling success, Last week, Tacoma Power recovered 3,013 coho salmon adults, 61 coho jacks, five fall chinook adults, 101 summer-run steelhead, 108 winter-run steelhead and ten cutthroat trout at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during seven days of operations.

During the week Tacoma Power employees released 60 coho adults and four jacks into Lake Scanewa at the Day Use Site, 271 coho adults, ten coho jacks and four winter-run steelhead into the Cispus River above the mouth of Yellow Jacket Creek, 130 coho adults into the upper Cowlitz River at the Skate Creek Bridge in Packwood, Washington, 188 coho adults, two jacks, five fall chinook adults, one winter-run steelhead and two cutthroat trout into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately at 9,620 cubic feet per second on Monday, December 10. Water visibility is four feet.

Lewis River - No report on angling success. North Fork from Colvin Creek upstream to overhead power lines below Merwin Dam opens to fishing for hatchery coho and hatchery steelhead Sunday Dec. 16.

Flows below Merwin Dam are 11,500 cfs today (Monday December 10).

Sturgeon

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - We sampled 52 bank anglers just below Bonneville Dam that kept 1 legal and released zero fish including sublegals. From the Vancouver to the Gorge we sampled 5 boats/9 anglers with 35 sublegals released and no legals kept.

Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam - Abundance of white sturgeon populations in the three pools are estimated every three to five years. The most recent assessments estimated the abundance of three- to six-foot sturgeon to be 12,800 in John Day Reservoir in 2004, 12,700 in The Dalles Reservoir in 2005, and 42,108 in Bonneville Reservoir in 2006.

In 2007, the recreational fisheries catch guidelines were 165 fish from John Day Pool, 100 from The Dalles Pool, and 700 from Bonneville Pool. Retention was allowed in The Dalles Pool until near the end of March, John Day Pool through mid June, and near the end of July in Bonneville Pool.

As per permanent regulations, sturgeon may be retained from the recreational fisheries beginning January 1, 2008 and continue until guidelines are met. The Sturgeon Management Task Force is expected to meet in January 2008 to review 2007 harvests, the 2007 stock assessment in John Day Pool, and to discuss management options for 2008 including catch guidelines.

Trout

Klineline Pond - 13 bank anglers kept 10 rainbows. Planted with 2,000 catchable size rainbows Dec. 4.

Icehouse Lake near Bridge of the Gods - No report on angling success. Planted with 1,500 catchable size rainbows Dec. 4.
