Salmon/Steelhead
Cowlitz River
- Effort and catches are light. 7 boat anglers kept one steelhead
while 2 bank anglers had no catch.
Last week, Tacoma
Power recovered 207 coho salmon adults and nine winter-run steelhead
at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during five days of operations.
During the week Tacoma Power employees released 31 coho adults and two
winter-run steelhead into Lake Scanewa at the Day Use Site and five
coho adults into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton,
Washington.
River flows at Mayfield
Dam are approximately at 8,870 cubic feet per second on Monday, February
4. Water visibility is nine feet.
Bonneville Pool
- No effort.
The Dalles Pool
- Including fish released, boat anglers averaged 1.5 steelhead per
rod.

near Woodland - Planted with 20 surplus hatchery steelhead averaging
nearly 8 pounds each Jan. 30.
Smelt
The smelt run appears
to have backed down to the estuary in response to the cold river temperatures.
No commercial landings were reported last week. WDFW survey crews observed
just a couple of seals in the Columbia River near Longview and none
in the Cowlitz River. WDFW test dipping in the Cowlitz on Wednesday
January 30th produced no catch.
The Cowlitz flow
at Castle Rock is 14,600 CFS today (Monday February 4). Water temperature
in the mainstem Columbia at Cathlamet increased slightly to nearly 39
degrees today. Last week the Cowlitz was also at 39 degrees. Water temperatures
are cooler than the minimum 40ºF that smelt prefer.
