Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - For the week of Feb 6-10, 22 shore anglers were interviewed who fished 73.5 hours and caught zero fish.
During the past week, Tacoma Power employees recovered 45 winter-run steelhead and one spring chinook salmon during five days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery. Tacoma Power employees released 26 winter-run steelhead into the upper Cowlitz River system at Lake Scanewa Day Use Park during the week. During the week Tacoma Power employees recycled 14 winter-run steelhead downstream to the Barrier Dam boat launch.During the week a total of nine winter-run steelhead were released into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington. River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 9,170 cubic feet per second on Monday, February 13. Water visibility is over 5 feet.
Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream - 5 Kalama and 1 Longview area bank anglers had no catch. ODFW personnel observed a hatchery spring chinook lost near Kalama. 17 boats and 50 Oregon bank salmonid anglers were counted during yesterday's flight.
Another spring chinook has returned to the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery. Also, nine more spring chinook were landed in the commercial sturgeon fishery last week. Total catch to date is 10 fish. Price to the fisher is reported a high (record?) $7.50-$10 per pound.
Bonneville Pool - No effort observed for salmonids.
The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers averaged over ½ steelhead per rod. However, a majority of the catch were wild fish that had to be released.
Ringold - During the past two weeks at Ringold we interviewed 54 anglers with a total catch of 19 steelhead. Anglers are averaging one steelhead for every 11 hours of fishing.
Kalama River - Looking very nice with exceptional looking and numbers of early wild winter steelhead returning, along with some winter brood (hatchery fish from the wild winter broodstock program).
Friday (2/8) - 33 hatchery fish including 4 winter brood were recycled to the lower river and 45 wild winter steelhead were passed upstream of Kalama Falls Hatchery (KFH).Monday (2/13) - 9 winter brood were recycled to the lower river and 48 wild winter steelhead were passed upstream of Kalama Falls Hatchery (KFH). Also 22 steelhead were planted into Kress Lake.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - 4 boats/7 boat anglers near Vancouver released 15 sublegals and 1 oversize. Near Bonneville Dam, 3 bank anglers had no catch.
Bonneville Pool - Anglers are catching some legals.
The Dalles Pool - Slow for legal sized fish.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville Pool - No effort observed for either specie.
The Dalles Pool - Bank and boat anglers averaged about a walleye kept/released per rod. Boat anglers fishing for walleye also released a few bass.
Trout -
Kress Lake near Kalama - 15 anglers had no catch. 32 surplus adult hatchery winter steelhead were released here on Feb. 3.
Horseshoe Lake in Woodland - No effort was observed.
Klineline Pond - 42 bank anglers kept 14 catchable size and 1 brood stock rainbows and released 49 catchable size fish. Planted with 1,000 half-pound rainbows on Feb. 6.
Kidney Lake near North Bonneville - No report on angling success. Planted with 1,000 half pound rainbows on Feb. 6.
Smelt -
Lower Columbia mainstem - A total of 13,039 lbs. of smelt have been landed through Feb. 9 in the commercial fishery. Prices paid to fishers for smelt has been from $1.00-$2.50/lb recently, and are expected to go up some by next week.
Water temperature was 43 degrees this morning near Cathlamet.
Cowlitz River - The few fishers from Castle Rock to Gerhart Park had no catch last Saturday (Feb. 11) evening. Few birds and no seals were observed.
River continues to drop and clear. Flows at Castle Rock were 13,000 cfs this morning, near the long term mean for this date.
