Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - On January 9th and 10th, 22 shore anglers were interviewed who fished 65.75 hours. At Blue Creek and below the Barrier Dam, three winter-run steelhead and one summer-run steelhead were caught.

During the past week, Tacoma Power employees recovered 820 coho salmon adults, 38 coho jacks, 179 winter-run steelhead and eight cutthroat trout during five days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.

Tacoma Power employees released 130 coho salmon adults, one jack and nine winter-run steelhead into the upper Cowlitz River into Lake Scanewa Day Use during the week. In addition, 245 coho adults, 22 jacks and five winter-run steelhead were released at Franklin Bridge in Packwood, and 255 coho adults, four jacks and eight winter-run steelhead were released into the Cispus River above the mouth of Yellowjacket Creek during the week.

During the week Tacoma Power employees recycled 82 winter-run steelhead downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch, and they recycled 122 winter-run steelhead, five summer steelhead and three cutthroat trout downstream to the Olequa boat launch.

During the week a total of 153 coho adults, five jacks, ten winter-run steelhead and four cutthroat trout were released into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 18,400 cubic feet per second on Tuesday, January 17. Water visibility is two feet.

This year's hatchery returns of hatchery winter steelhead to Cowlitz facilities are tracking behind last year. This year, a total of 813 and 876 hatchery winter steelhead had returned to Cowlitz Trout and Salmon hatcheries, respectively, through Jan. 10 and 11. Last year, 964 and 2,373 fish had returned to the same facilities through the same period.

Kalama River - No report on angling success. This year's hatchery returns of hatchery winter steelhead are slightly more than half of last year. 578 hatchery winter steelhead had returned to Kalama Falls Hatchery through Jan. 11. Last year, 981 fish had returned through the same period.

Lewis River - No report on angling success. This year's returns of hatchery winter steelhead to Merwin Dam are down slightly from last year. Through Jan. 10, a total of 1,435 fish had been counted at the dam. Through the same period last year, 1,658 fish were counted.

In general, spring chinook returns are down slightly from last year for the Cowlitz and Kalama rivers but higher in the Lewis. The specific comparisons are:

Bonneville and The Dalles pools - No salmonid anglers were sampled.

John Day Pool - No report on angling success.

Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - No report currently available.

Bonneville Pool - No legal sized fish were found in the sample last week.

The Dalles Pool - Bank and boat anglers were catching some legals.

John Day Pool - No report on angling success.

Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville Pool - No anglers fishing for either specie were found last week.

The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers are catching some walleye. No effort observed for bass.

John Day Pool - No report on angling success.

Trout -

Klineline Pond - Planted with 75 brood stock rainbows averaging 5 pounds each and 75 ten pounds each on Jan. 6. Also received 1,000 catchable size rainbows on Jan. 9.

Smelt -

Mainstem Columbia - Another 425 pounds were caught by commercial fishers yesterday (Jan. 16). Water temperature was 44.6 degrees this morning at Cathlamet. Lots of seals around County Line Park late last week.

Cowlitz River - No report of any smelt in the Cowlitz. Flows were 34,000 cfs at Castle Rock this morning, over twice the long-term mean for this date
