Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - For the week of January 23 - 27, a total of 30 anglers were interviewed who fished 95.25 hours (all but 2 were shore anglers). One winter-run steelhead was caught at Mission and three winter-run steelhead were caught at Blue Creek.
During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 60 winter-run steelhead during three days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.
Tacoma Power employees released 21 winter-run steelhead into the upper Cowlitz River into Lake Scanewa Day Use during the week.
During the week Tacoma Power employees recycled 48 winter-run steelhead downstream to the Olequa boat launch.
During the week a total of 13 winter-run steelhead were released into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington.
River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 18,100 cubic feet per second on Monday, January 30. Water visibility is four feet.
Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream - No report on angling success. The first commercially caught salmon was reported last week (16 pounds at $6.50/lb to the fisher).
Bonneville Pool - Light effort and no catch observed for steelhead.
The Dalles Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged over a steelhead per rod. No catch observed from the bank.
Kalama River - Too much of a good thing- high and muddy!
Fish sorted on Friday (1/27) - 92 "fresh" and 22 "recapture" hatchery winter steelhead were recycled to the lower river, while 22 wild winter steelhead were passed upstream of Kalama Falls Hatchery (KFH).Monday(1/30) - 3 "fresh" hatchery winter brood steelhead were recycled to the lower river, while 16 wild winter steelehead were passed upstream of Kalama Falls Hatchery (KFH). Also, 77 steelhead were planted into Kress Lake.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - No report on angling success.
Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers averaged a legal kept per every 10 rods. Slow for legal sized fish from the bank.
The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers are catching some legals. Slow fishing from the bank.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville and The Dalles pools - Light effort for walleye in Bonneville Pool; none found in The Dalles Pool. No effort for bass observed in either pool.
Trout -
Klineline Pond - 59 bank anglers kept 60 catchable sized rainbows and 7 brood trout plus released 10 catchable size fish. Planted with 1,000 catchable size rainbows on Jan. 23

- Battleground Lake - 125 fish averaging 5 pounds each and 49 averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 25;
- Carlisle Lake near Onalaska - 55 fish averaging 5 pounds each and 29 averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 24;
- Icehouse Lake near Bridge of the Gods - 20 fish averaging 5 pounds each and 15 averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 23;
- Kidney Lake near North Bonneville - 35 fish averaging 5 pounds each and 30 averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 23;
- Little Ash Lake near Stevenson - 20 fish averaging 5 pounds each and 15 averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 23;
- Northwestern Lake on the White Salmon River - 20 fish averaging 5 pounds each and 15 averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 23;
- Tunnel Lake (just east of Drano Lake) - 20 fish averaging 5 pounds each and 15 averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 23.
Recent plants of catchable sized rainbows:
- Silver Lake (Cowlitz County) - 5,325 fish on Jan. 19.
Recent plants of surplus hatchery adult winter steelhead
- Kress Lake near Kalama - 29 fish averaging 10 pounds each on Jan. 24.
Smelt -
Mainstem Columbia - A total of 7,355 lbs. of smelt have been landed so far in the commercial fishery (landings for the January 26th fishing period are incomplete and will be updated this week).
Cowlitz River - No vehicles/dippers all day @ Carnival Market on Saturday Jan. 28. No effort seen at Lexington or Castle Rock in the evening. River was high and muddy.
