Salmon/Steelhead -
Drano Lake - Effort and catches are increasing. About 20 boats/day. Including fish released, boat anglers averaged 2/3 steelhead per rod last week.
White Salmon River - Effort and catches are increasing here too. About 30 boats/day. Boat anglers averaged nearly a steelhead per rod last week when counting fish released. Bank anglers were also catching some fish. Lots of float tubers showing up here.
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Including fish released, boat and bank anglers from Kalama downstream averaged about a steelhead per every 3 rods last week. About 60% of the steelhead caught were hatchery fish. Fish ranged from 21 to 37 inches. Fewer hatchery summer chinook are appearing in the catch. Effort is increasing at the mouth of the Cowlitz with 54 boats counted there last Thursday (July 17).
Through Sunday July 20, a total of 70,769 steelhead had been counted at Bonneville Dam. This is 1.5 times the recent 10 year average (46,606 fish). Daily counts have exceeded 4,000 fish since July 17. Over 6,200 fish were counted on July 19. Water temperature at Bonneville Dam is 67 degrees.
The preseason forecast was 22,000 upper Columbia and 80 Snake River sockeye. Through July 20, a total of 38,600 sockeye had been counted at Bonneville Dam of which 12 had passed Lower Granite Dam. The Technical Advisory Committee updated the run size to 40,000 fish. The escapement goal is 65,000 sockeye passing Priest Rapids Dam.
John Day Pool - Light effort and catches.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Most of the angling effort on the lower Columbia is now centered on salmonids. Most of the catch last week were sublegals which had to be released.
John Day Pool - Boat anglers were catching some legals. Sturgeon may be kept through Sunday July 27.
Walleye and Bass -
John Day Pool - Boat anglers averaged 1.5 walleye and 3 bass per rod last week.
Trout -
Riffe Lake - Slower for landlocked coho last week. More pleasure boaters than anglers. The lake was reported 7.3 feet below full pool today.
Mayfield Lake - Producing some rainbows. More pleasure boaters than anglers.
Merwin Reservoir - Boat anglers averaged better than 3 kokanee per rod last week. Fish ranged between 10-14 inches. The lake was reported 4.5 feet below full pool last Friday (July 18).
Yale Reservoir - Boat anglers averaged 5 kokanee per rod last week. Fish ranged from 8-12 inches. The reservoir was reported 3 feet below full pool last Friday (July 18).
Klineline Pond - Producing some rainbows and browns for bank anglers.
Goose Lake - Producing a mixture of 12-14 inch cutthroats, eastern brooks, and browns for boat anglers.
