Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - Some steelhead are being caught. During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 396 spring chinook adults, 36 jacks and 54 steelhead during five days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.

Tacoma Power employees released 248 spring chinook adults, 40 jacks and one steelhead adult into the upper Cowlitz River at the Lake Scanewa Day Use area above Cowlitz Falls Dam during the week.

During the week Tacoma Power employees recycled 39 steelhead adults downstream to the Massey Bar boat launch on the Cowlitz River.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are currently at 4,140 cubic feet per second on Monday, June 13. Flows will be increased for a 12-hour period during the day on Tuesday, June 14 for downstream juvenile fish migration. Flows will be reduced to approximately 4,100 cubic feet per second after Tuesday. Water visibility at Mayfield Dam is over 12 feet.

Kalama and Lewis rivers - Anglers are catching summer run steelhead.

Wind River - Effort and catches are low. Through June 12, a total of 840 spring chinook had returned to Carson National Fish Hatchery.

Klickitat River - No salmon or steelhead were sampled.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Including fish released, boat and bank anglers averaged chinook/steelhead kept/released per every 7 rods based on mainly complete and incomplete trips, respectively. More chinook were handled than steelhead. Chinook were caught throughout the river; steelheading was best from Longview downstream.

Slightly over half the chinook and nearly all the steelhead caught were kept.

During the Sunday June 12 flight, a total of 268 salmonid boats were counted in addition to 284 WA and 243 OR bank anglers. Approximately 1/3 of the boats were found in the Camas/Washougal area and 1/3 of the WA bank in the Longview area.

Bonneville Pool - Light boat effort last weekend; 1 boat off the Klickitat, none off the Wind and White Salmon rivers plus Drano Lake.

The Dalles and John Day pools - Bank anglers are catching some chinook.

Sturgeon -

Ports of Chinook and Ilwaco - Based on data currently available, charter boat anglers averaged 0.47 legals per rod while private boat anglers averaged 0.16 per rod.

Deep River/Knappton ramps - Boat anglers averaged 0.23 legals kept per rod. Catch rates were down from the same period in 2004 (1/3 legal per rod average last year).

During the Sunday June 12 flight, approximately 350 private and 20 charters were counted in the estuary. In 2004, nearly 500 private boats and 21 charters were counted during the Saturday June 12 flight (note: effort is typically higher Saturday vs Sunday).

Most of the effort (private and charter boats) was observed near Tongue Point today.

Wauna Powerlines upstream to Beacon Rock - Boat anglers in the gorge averaged a legal kept per every 11 rods while those in the Camas/Washougal area averaged one per every 18 rods. Boat anglers were also catching some legals in the Longview area.

Bonneville Pool - Closed for sturgeon retention through the end of the year.

The Dalles Pool - Bank and boat anglers are catching some legals.

John Day Pool - Slow for legal size fish.

Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville Pool - No effort found for either specie.

The Dalles Pool - The few boat anglers sampled averaged nearly a walleye kept per rod; the few bank anglers 2.5 bass per rod.

John Day Pool - The few boat anglers sampled averaged nearly 2 walleye kept/released per rod. No effort was observed for bass.

Trout -

Lakes planted with catchable size rainbows last week:

Shad -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Including fish released, boat anglers in the gorge averaged over 10 shad per rod based on complete trips; bank anglers 5 per rod based on incomplete trips. Boat anglers in the Camas/Washougal area averaged less than 4 fish per rod; a few fish were being caught off Steamboat Landing in Washougal. Shad were also being caught by bank and boat anglers from Kalama to Vancouver.

At Bonneville Dam, over 1/3 million shad were counted on June 11, the highest single day count this year. Through June 12, over 1.7 million shad have been counted at Bonneville Dam and 2.6 million at The Dalles Dam.
