Sport Sampling Summaries - PDF Format

Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - Boat anglers averaged about ½ hatchery steelhead per rod last week. A few steelhead and a spring chinook were being caught by bank anglers.

During the past week, Tacoma Power employees recovered 997 spring chinook adults, 105 spring chinook jacks and 74 steelhead adults during five days of separator operations at Tacoma Power's Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.

A total of 700 spring chinook adults and 20 spring chinook jacks were released into the upper Cowlitz River at the Lake Scanewa Day Use Park during the past week. During the past week, Tacoma Power employees recycled a total of 58 steelhead downstream to the Massey Bar boat launch.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 3,540 cubic feet per second on Monday, June 23. Water visibility is over 13 feet.

Kalama River - Boat anglers averaged a hatchery steelhead per every 6 rods during the week of June 8-14. Bank anglers were catching some hatchery spring chinook and hatchery steelhead.

Lewis River - Bank anglers on the lower river were catching some hatchery steelhead. Flows below Merwin Dam were 1,750 cfs today.

Wind River - Effort and catches were near zero. Monday is the last day to fish for spring chinook. From 400 feet below Shipherd Falls upstream (including all tributaries) will be closed to all fishing beginning July 1.

Drano Lake - A few anglers are still trying but no report on angling success. Monday is the last day of the spring chinook fishery. Remains open for hatchery steelhead.

White Salmon River - No report on angling success. Beginning July 1, the daily limit will be six salmon, no more than 2 adults from the mouth upstream to the powerhouse. In addition, 2 hatchery steelhead may be retained. River from powerhouse upstream to Northwestern (Condit) dam is closed to fishing through mid-November under permanent regulations.

Klickitat River - Some really bright chinook plus steelhead over 12 pounds are being caught. Majority of catch and effort from Ice House to salmon hatchery.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a steelhead per every 3 rods while bank anglers averaged one per every 12 rods last week. Some hatchery summer chinook up to 43 inches total length were sampled last week.

Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day Pools - Best fishing for summer chinook was in The Dalles Pool where bank anglers averaged a fish kept or released per every 2.2 rods last week. Generally light catches and effort elsewhere.

The Technical Advisory Committee met today and agreed this year's Columbia River summer chinook is likely to be above 100,000 fish. The pre-season forecast was 87,600.

Sturgeon -

Ports of Chinook and Ilwaco - Nearly 90% of the charter boat anglers caught their one fish limit last week. Private boat anglers averaged a legal kept per every 2.8 rods.

Deep River/Knappton ramps - Boat anglers averaged a legal kept per every 2.4 rods last week.

Mainstem Columbia and its tributaries from the mouth upstream to the Wauna powerlines - Beginning Saturday June 28, sturgeon fishing goes to catch and release only through September 30.

Mainstem Columbia and its tributaries from the Wauna powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam- Sturgeon may be retained beginning July 1.

Bonneville,The Dalles, and John Day pools - Anglers are catching some legals in Bonneville and John Day pools. The Dalles Pool is now catch and release only.


Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day pools - Some walleye and bass are being caught in The Dalles and John Day pools. Including fish released, boat anglers in John Day Pool averaged a walleye per every 3 rods last week.

Trout -

Silver Lake - Reported to be good for trout and crappies.

Mayfield Lake - Boat anglers averaged 2.5 rainbows per rod last week. Bank anglers were also catching some fish.

Riffe Lake - Reports of limits of nice-size landlocked coho from the east end of the lake. The lake was reported 4.7 feet below full pool today.

Merwin Reservoir - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged 2.6 kokanee per rod last week. Fish ranged from 10-18 inches. Some landlocked coho are being caught from the bank. The reservoir was reported 4.66 feet below full pool today.

Speelyai Reservoir - Boat anglers averaged over 7 kokanee per rod last week (daily limit is 15 fish). Fish were 9-10 inches. The reservoir was reported 3.72 feet below full pool today.

Klineline Pond - Producing some rainbows and browns. Planted with 1,920 rainbows averaging 2/3 pounds each on June 12.

Goose Lake - Producing a variety of trout including brookies, browns, and cutthroats. Browns ranged between 10-15 inches.

Mosquito Lake - Light effort but is producing some brookies.

Skate Creek and Tilton River - Planted with 3,000 rainbows nearly ½ pound each on June 17 and June 12, respectively.

Little Ash Lake near Stevenson - Planted with 1,843 rainbows averaging nearly 2/3 pound each on June 12.

Shad -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Based on mostly incomplete trips, bank anglers just downstream from Bonneville Dam averaged 2.8 shad per rod last week.

New Record:
Through yesterday (June 22), over 4 million shad have been counted at Bonneville Dam. The old record, 3.2 million, was just last year.
