Salmon/Steelhead

Cowlitz River - No report on angling success is currently available.

Last week Tacoma Power recovered 24 spring chinook adults, 16 jacks, 33 mini-jacks and 33 summer-run steelhead at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during five days of operations. Tacoma Power employees released five spring chinook salmon and 11 jacks into the upper Cowlitz River at the Lake Scanewa Day Use Site during the week. Four radio-tagged adult spring chinook adults were released into the Cispus River, and two radio-tagged spring chinook adults were released into the upper Cowlitz River at the Skate Bridge site in Packwood. Tacoma Power employees released 26 spring chinook mini-jacks into Riffe Lake.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 3,510 cubic feet per second on Monday, June 25. On Wednesday, flows will be increased for a 12-hour period. Water visibility is nine feet.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Last week we sampled 1,074 salmonid anglers (including 125 boats) with 72 adult and 6 jack summer chinook and 71 steelhead. Boat and bank anglers averaged an adult chinook per every 13.8 and 15.3 rods based on mainly complete and incomplete trips, respectively. Best adult chinook catches were from the bank at Kalama, Vancouver, and just below Bonneville Dam and by boat anglers in the gorge. Best steelhead catches were from Longview downstream.

The adult chinook sampled were evenly split between adipose clipped and unmarked fish. 61 (86%) of the 71 steelhead caught were kept.

A total of 338 salmonid boats and 280 WA and 166 OR bank anglers were counted during the Saturday June 23 flight. Heaviest boat effort (79) was in the gorge while 94 bank anglers were counted in the Longview area.

From June 16-24, an estimated 1,350 adult summer chinook have been kept from 14,000 angler trips. The season total is projected to be 2,100 fish from 22,400 angler trips by the end of June. The 2007 Upper Columbia Summer Chinook Allocation is 1,650 fish for the sport fishery below Priest Rapdis Dam.

Bonneville and The Dalles pools - Bank anglers are catching some summer chinook. Catch is evenly split between marked and unmarked fish.

John Day Pool - Light effort and no catch observed. This is the last week of sampling in this pool.

Sturgeon

Below Wauna power lines - At the Knappton/Deep River ramps boat anglers averaged slightly better than a legal kept per every 3 rods based on mainly complete trips. Bank anglers between Fort Columbia and Knappton kept a legal per every 11.5 rods based on mainly incomplete trips. No report is currently available for the ports of Chinook and Ilwaco.

During the Saturday June 23 flight, 559 sturgeon private and 20 charter boats were counted. In addition 65 bank anglers were counted from Fort Columbia to Knappton.

Above Wauna power lines - Boat anglers in the Longview area are catching some legals. Except for the gorge, effort was generally light. 55 boats were counted from Corbett to Marker #85 during the Saturday June 23 flight.

Bonneville Pool - Both bank and boat anglers are catching some legals.

Walleye and Bass

Bonneville Pool - Both bank and boat anglers are catching some bass. No walleye anglers were found in the sample.

The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers are catching some walleye. No bass anglers were sampled.

John Day Pool - Boat anglers are catching some walleye and bass. Bank anglers are catching some bass.

Trout

No report.

Shad

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Boat anglers in the gorge averaged nearly 4 shad kept/released per rod while bank anglers just below Bonneville Dam averaged 2.4 fish per rod based on mainly complete and incomplete trips, respectively. Effort and catch was light downstream from the gorge.

The Dalles Pool -7 boat anglers released 10 shad.

John Day Pool - 22 bank anglers kept 16 and released 104 shad. 37 boat anglers kept 31 and released 40 shad.
