Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River from Barrier Dam to I-5 - 11 bank anglers kept 1 winter steelhead; 12 boat anglers at Blue Creek kept 3 winter steelhead and 1 spring chinook.
Kalama River - From Chris Wagemann, Fish Biologist:
March 2: More of the same - River is low and clear. Light rain this week (3/4") provided a slight increase in water temperature and added a little color. Very few fish moving -2 wild and 5 hatchery winter-run steelhead handled at Kalama Falls Hatchery. Some nice steelhead starting to show in the lower river.
Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream - Very slow. Only 2 hatchery spring chinook sampled for slightly over 200 boats (completed trips). No catch observed kept for over 100 bank anglers.
During the same period last year, we sampled 11 spring chinook kept or released for 153 boats.
Through March 1, two spring chinook had been counted at Bonneville Dam. The recent 10-year average is 64 fish. Water temperature yesterday (March 6) was 41 degrees.
Bonneville Pool - Light effort and no catch.
The Dalles and John Day pools - Boat and bank anglers are catching some steelhead.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - No legal sized fish and only a few sublegals were sampled.
Bonneville Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a legal per every 3 rods. Bank anglers were also catching a few legals.
The Dalles Pool - No legals observed in the sampling.
John Day Pool - Boat anglers are catching a few legals. Slow fishing from the bank.
