Sport Sampling Summaries - PDF Format

Salmon/Steelhead -

Wind River - River was turbid this weekend. No reported catch.

Drano Lake - Good water conditions. One chinook reported caught on Saturday and a steelhead Sunday. Seven boats there Sunday (March 16) morning.

White Salmon River - River was turbid this weekend.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - We sampled almost 1,500 anglers and nearly 200 fish caught (136 kept) last week. Including fish released, anglers averaged a chinook per every 8 rods. 73% of the catch were hatchery fish. 96% of the fish sampled were of upriver origin. Almost all of the catch was from Vancouver upstream. Water is still turbid below mouth of Cowlitz; a foot or less of visibility in Longview/Cathlamet area today.

Through March 10, a total of 1,657 adult spring chinook had been counted at Bonneville Dam.

Bonneville Pool - Some steelhead are being caught. No spring chinook have been sampled to date.

The Dalles Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged 1.5 summer run steelhead (last year's returns) per rod last week. Bank anglers were also catching some fish.

John Day Pool - Bank anglers averaged 0.8 summer run steelhead (last year's return) per rod counting fish released last week. Boat anglers were also catching some fish.


Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Boat anglers were catching some legals between Camas/Washougal and Bonneville Dam. Between the Wauna power lines and Bonneville Dam - Closes to sturgeon retention from March 24 through June 30. Catch and release angling will be permitted.

Bonneville Pool - Anglers were catching a few legals but generally slow overall.

The Dalles and John Day pools - Slow for legal size fish.


Walleye and Bass -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Not a lot of effort but boat anglers released some walleye in the gorge.

Bonneville Pool - Some bass are being caught. No in-sample effort observed for walleye.

The Dalles Pool - The few boat anglers sampled last week averaged 2 walleye kept per rod. No in-sample catch of bass was observed.

John Day Pool - Boat anglers averaged a walleye kept or released per every 8 rods plus over 4 bass per rod.


Trout -

Klineline Pond - Catches have increased since the area was recently planted with trout and the cormorants are nesting. Including fish released, bank anglers averaged 3 trout per rod last week. Catch is a mixture of rainbows and browns. The lake was planted with 2,000 nice sized catchable rainbows last week.

Kress Lake near Kalama and Horseshoe Lake near Woodland - Steelhead catches are picking up in these waters. Horseshoe was planted with 3,200 catchable size rainbows last week.


Smelt -

Last week - Smelt were no longer reported in the Lewis but a new batch of fish were reported in the Cowlitz.
