Salmon/Steelhead -

Last week we sampled 961 salmonid anglers (including 373 boats) with 33 chinook and 9 steelhead. Bank and boat anglers averaged a chinook kept/released per about every 30 rods based on mainly incomplete and completed trips, respectively. 76% of the chinook caught were kept. Based on Visual Stock Identification, 82% of the fish kept were lower river stock.

All but one of the 29 chinook were mark and VSI sampled. 6 lower river and 1 upriver snouts containing possible CWTs were recovered.

485 salmonid boats and 211 OR and 100 WA bank anglers were counted during the Saturday March 18 flight.

Comparison to recent years:

In 2004 and 2005, the boat catch rate from I-5 Bridge downstream was a chinook per every 16 rods during the same week.

There wasn't an actual flight in 2005. 935 salmonid boats and 495 OR and 179 WA bank anglers were counted from I-5 downstream on Saturday March 20, 2004.

Wind River/Drano Lake - No boats at Wind or Drano yesterday Sunday March 19 at mid-AM.

Only one spring chinook had been counted at Bonneville Dam through March 13.

Cowlitz River from the barrier dam to Olequa - For the week of March 13-17 on the Cowlitz River 47 bank anglers were interviewed who fished 164 hours and caught 1 spring chinook and one winter steelhead. These fish were both caught at Olequa. 37 boat anglers were interviewed who fished 227 hours and caught 13 winter steelhead. Most of these fish were captured around Blue Creek.

Trout -

Klineline Pond - 39 bank anglers with 52 browns and 36 rainbows kept and 16 rainbows and 10 browns released. Best success is by anglers using bait in the NW corner of the pond. Planted with 1,000 catchable sized browns on Monday March 13.

Other -

A confirmed 30-pound striped bass was caught at Skamokawa during the commercial salmon fishery a couple weeks ago.
