Salmon/Steelhead

Cowlitz River - No report on angling success is currently available. Last week, Tacoma Power recovered 75 winter-run steelhead and one coho salmon adult at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during five days of operations.

During the week Tacoma Power employees released 14 radio-tagged winter-run steelhead into the Cispus River, three steelhead into the upper Cowlitz River at the Franklin Bridge in Packwood, Washington, 42 steelhead adults into Lake Scanewa at the Day Use Site, and 16 winter-run steelhead and one coho salmon into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately at 5,090 cubic feet per second on Monday, March 24.

Lewis River - Some spring chinook are reported being caught from the main Lewis. Light effort and catches from the North Fork. Flows below Merwin Dam are 5,500 cfs today (Monday March 24) which are near the long-term mean for that date.

Wind River - A couple boats were observed here last Saturday (March 22). No effort was observed during the week. No reports of any success.

Drano Lake - Two to four boats were observed last Saturday and Sunday. A spring chinook was reported caught each day though none were found in the sample.

Klickitat River from the Fisher Hill Bridge (located about 2 miles upstream the mouth) downstream - Opens to fishing for hatchery chinook and hatchery steelhead Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays only beginning April 2. Daily limit is 1 salmonid.

Flows at Pitt are 2,050 cfs today (March 24) which is the same as the long-term mean for this date.

Lower Columbia from the Hayden Island west powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam - Last week we sampled 1,818 salmonid anglers (including 764 boats) with 246 chinook and 1 steelhead. Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a chinook per every 6.9 rods based on mainly completed trips while bank anglers averaged one per every 16.6 rods based on mainly incomplete trips.

214 (87%) of the chinook caught were kept. 97% of the fish kept were upriver stock based on Visual Stock Identification (VSI).

900 salmonid boats and 74 WA bank and 29 OR bank anglers were counted during the Saturday March 22 flight. Slightly over half the boats were found from the powerlines to the Portland International Airport Tower.

This year's boat count is twice as many as the same time the past couple years. During the Saturday March 24, 2007 flight and creel sampling a total of 421 salmonid boats were counted from the I-5 Bridge downstream. A total of 510 salmonid boats were counted from the I-5 Bridge downstream during the Sunday March 26, 2006 flight. (Please note: Sunday counts are typically less than Saturdays; however, poor weather on Saturday March 24, 2007 may have contributed to a lower boat count. However, strong wind was also a factor in the gorge count this past Saturday).

Anglers are reminded fishing is closed for all species one hour after official sunset on Mondays through one hour before sunrise Wednesdays.

Lower Columbia from Buoy 10 upstream to the Hayden Island west powerlines - Opened to fishing for hatchery spring chinook and hatchery steelhead today. Remains open 7 days week through April 4.

Bonneville Pool - No salmonid effort was sampled.

John Day Pool - Including fish released, bank anglers averaged a steelhead per rod. No spring chinook were found in the sample.
