Lower Columbia
from the Hayden Island west powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam -
Last week we sampled 1,818 salmonid anglers (including 764 boats) with
246 chinook and 1 steelhead. Including fish released, boat anglers averaged
a chinook per every 6.9 rods based on mainly completed trips while bank
anglers averaged one per every 16.6 rods based on mainly incomplete
trips.
214 (87%) of the
chinook caught were kept. 97% of the fish kept were upriver stock based
on Visual Stock Identification (VSI).
900 salmonid boats
and 74 WA bank and 29 OR bank anglers were counted during the Saturday
March 22 flight. Slightly over half the boats were found from the powerlines
to the Portland International Airport Tower.
This year's boat
count is twice as many as the same time the past couple years. During
the Saturday March 24, 2007 flight and creel sampling a total of 421
salmonid boats were counted from the I-5 Bridge downstream. A total
of 510 salmonid boats were counted from the I-5 Bridge downstream during
the Sunday March 26, 2006 flight. (Please note: Sunday counts are typically
less than Saturdays; however, poor weather on Saturday March 24, 2007
may have contributed to a lower boat count. However, strong wind was
also a factor in the gorge count this past Saturday).
Anglers are reminded
fishing is closed for all species one hour after official sunset on
Mondays through one hour before sunrise Wednesdays.
