Salmon/Steelhead
- Grays River - From the Hwy. 4
Bridge downstream, opens to fishing for hatchery steelhead beginning November
15. The mainstem Grays upstream from the Hwy. 4 Bridge and the West Fork will
open to fishing for hatchery steelhead in mid December.
- Cowlitz River - On the Cowlitz
River below the barrier dam, some hatchery coho continue to be caught though
a lot of dark fish are being released. At Lake Scanewa (Cowlitz Falls Reservoir),
boat anglers averaged a coho per every 2.5 rods while the few bank anglers
sampled had even better success.
- During the past week Tacoma Power's
Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator recovered 5,107 coho salmon, 1,061 coho
jacks, 220 fall chinook salmon, four fall chinook jacks, 44 summer-run steelhead,
three winter-run steelhead and 22 cutthroat trout during seven days of separator
operations.
- Tacoma Power employees released
3,787 coho adults, 806 coho jacks, 185 fall chinook adults and two fall chinook
jacks, into the upper Cowlitz River at the Day Use Park on Lake Scanewa during
the week.
- Tacoma Power employees also released
a total of 267 adult coho salmon, 53 coho jacks and two chinook adults at
the Skate Creek Bridge site on the upper Cowlitz River in Packwood , Washington
during the week.
- In addition, Tacoma Power employees
released 841 coho salmon, 195 coho jacks, 18 fall chinook adults, five cutthroat
trout and one winter-run steelhead into the Tilton River arm of Mayfield Lake
at the Ike Kinswa State Park boat ramp.
- A total of 69 summer-run steelhead,
two winter-run steelhead, one chum salmon adult and 15 cutthroat trout were
recycled downstream to the Barrier Dam boat launch during the week.
- River flows at Mayfield Dam are
approximately 2,960 cubic feet per second on Tuesday, November 12.
- Kalama and Lewis rivers - Producing
some hatchery coho.
- Klickitat River - Boat anglers
on the lower river did very well on coho last week, averaging better than
a fish per rod. In the mainstem Columbia at the mouth of the Klickitat, boat
anglers averaged about 2/3 coho per rod.
- Lower Columbia below Bonneville
Dam - Effort and catches are generally low.
- Ringold - Including steelhead
released, anglers averaged one fish for every two rods last week. Some fall
chinook continue to be taken. An estimated 7,300 adult fall chinook were harvested
in the Hanford Reach sport fishery in 2002. It was the largest single season
catch of adult fall chinook for the upper Columbia since records were kept
beginning in 1968.
Sturgeon
- Lower Columbia below Bonneville
Dam - Catch and keep fishing begins November 23.
- Bonneville Pool - Anglers are
catching some legals in this fishery which is currently open to catch and
keep. Through Oct. 31, an estimated 1,334 of the 1,520 sturgeon guideline
(88%) had been taken.
