Grays River -
No report on angling success though 400 adult coho returned to the hatchery
last week. Mainstem upstream to the South Fork and West Fork upstream
to the hatchery intake/footbridge is scheduled to remain open for hatchery
coho through Monday October 15.
Elochoman River
- No report on angling success though 300 adult coho returned to
the hatchery last week. Bonus daily limit for hatchery adult coho is
scheduled to run through Monday October 15.
North Fork Toutle
River - Light effort. Some coho are being caught.
Cowlitz River
- Coho are being caught around the mouth of the Toutle and at the
barrier dam.
Last week, Tacoma
Power recovered 2,904 coho salmon adults, 634 coho jacks, 741 fall chinook
adults, 57 jacks, 50 summer-run steelhead and nine cutthroat trout at
the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during six days of operations.
During the week
Tacoma Power employees released 1,158 coho adults and 312 jacks into
Riffe Lake at the Taidnapam North boat launch, 1,076 coho adults and
259 coho jacks into Lake Scanewa at the Day Use Site, 76 coho adults
and 16 jacks into the Cispus River above the mouth of Yellow Jacket
Creek, 132 coho adults and 33 jacks into the upper Cowlitz River at
the Skate Creek Bridge in Packwood, Washington, 223 fall chinook adults,
46 jacks, 26 coho adults and one coho jack into the Tilton River at
Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington, and 18 coho adults, 48 fall
chinook adults and eight jacks into Mayfield Lake at the Ike Kinswa
State Park boat launch.

Dam are approximately at 3,620 cubic feet per second on Monday, October
8. Water visibility is 15 feet.
Kalama River
- Generally light effort with some coho and summer run steelhead
being caught.
Lewis River -
Some coho are being caught around the salmon hatchery.
Klickitat River
- Some fall chinook are being caught.
Yakima River
- Effort was slightly lower last week compared to the previous week.
WDFW staff interviewed 119 anglers (24% of the effort). An estimated
55 adults and 23 jacks were harvested. As of Oct 7, an estimated 104
adults and 74 jacks had been harvested. No steelhead have been reported
caught and released. One coho was released. Anglers averaged 16 hours
per fish caught.
Lower Columbia
below Bonneville Dam - Anglers are catching some fall chinook and
coho.
Bonneville Pool
- Boat anglers are catching a mixture of fall chinook, coho, and
steelhead. Monday October 15 is the last scheduled day for the night
closure/non buoyant lure restriction.
Ringold - The
Ringold steelhead fishery opened Oct 1. Effort was a little below normal
with roughly 20 bank anglers and 30 boat anglers per day. WDFW staff
interviewed 430 anglers this week (28% of the effort). Harvest was very
slow with only 75 steelhead retained. More than 50% of the catch was
comprised of wild and adipose only clipped steelhead which have to be
released. Only adipose and ventral fin clipped fish may be retained.
Hanford Reach
- Anglers harvested an estimated 910 adults and 343 jacks last week.
WDFW/PSMFC staff interviewed 277 boats (693 anglers) during the week
(27% of the effort). Effort is down a little more than 20% from last
year. Catch however is now well above last year with 1,558 adults and
457 jacks harvested as of Sept 30 compared to 1,421 adults and 160 jacks
through Oct 1, 2006. Anglers averaged a chinook for each 14 pole hours
or 1.2 fish per boat.
Early coho abundance
appears to be less than expected; however, it's still too early to account
for all the fish. The Technical Advisory Committee is scheduled to review
the coho run size today (Tuesday October 9). Preseason forecasts include
293,700 early stock and 73,200 late stock coho returning to the Columbia
River mouth.
