Salmon/Steelhead

Lower portions of Abernathy, Coal, Germany, and Mill creeks near Longview - Re-open to fishing for hatchery steelhead beginning November 1. All streams remain closed to fishing for salmon year round.

Cowlitz River - Bank anglers at the Barrier Dam are catching some coho.

Last week, Tacoma Power recovered 4,377 coho salmon adults, 910 jacks, 608 fall chinook adults, 66 jacks, 40 summer-run steelhead and eleven cutthroat trout at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during seven days of operations.

Tacoma Power employees released 853 adult and 253 coho jacks into Riffe Lake at the Taidnapam North boat launch, 381 adult and seven coho jacks into Lake Scanewa at the Day Use Site, and 299 adult and 56 fall chinook jacks, 74 adult and six coho jacks and two cutthroat trout into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington during the week.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately at 3,640 cubic feet per second on Monday, October 15. Water visibility is over 12 feet.

Kalama River - Light effort though some coho are being caught.

Lewis River - Some coho are being caught though most were released.

Drano Lake and White Salmon River - Light effort at both locations although some coho are being caught at the White Salmon River.

Klickitat River - Bank anglers are catching some fall chinook. By permanent rule, all chinook must be released from 400 feet upstream from #5 fishway to the boundary markers below the salmon hatchery beginning November 1.

Yakima River - Angler activity picked up this past week. WDFW staff interviewed 218 anglers (22% of the effort). An estimated 82 adult chinook, 87 jacks and 8 coho were harvested. As of Oct 14, an estimated 186 adult chinook, 161 jacks, and 8 coho have been harvested. One steelhead was reported caught and released. Anglers averaged 11 hours per fish.

Next Monday (October 22) is the last scheduled day to fish for salmon.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Boat anglers in the gorge are mainly catching fall chinook while those from Woodland to Camas/Washougal are primarily catching coho.

By permanent rule, Beacon Rock upstream to Bonneville Dam will close to fishing for salmon beginning November 1.

Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers are catching fall chinook and coho. Effort is heaviest around the mouth of the Klickitat.

Ringold - WDFW staff interviewed 337 anglers this past week (35% of the effort). Harvest was slow again with only 70 steelhead retained. A larger percentage of the catch (30%) was comprised of wild and adipose only clipped steelhead. As of Oct 14, an estimated 291 steelhead have been caught during the fishery with 139 adipose-right ventral fin clipped retained and 6 ad clipped only fish retained.

Note: Ad clipped only fish must be released through October. In addition 71 wild steelhead have been caught and released.

Hanford Reach - Effort and catch dropped last week. Anglers averaged 1 fish for every 13.4 pole hours or 1 fish for every 2.4 rods. Most anglers fishing in the lower reach were targeting steelhead and chinook. Fish condition has been decent with a few coho also being caught. The salmon season from the Old Hanford townsite wooden powerline towers to Vernita Bridge will be closed beginning October 23.

Sturgeon

Lower Columbia from the Wauna powerlines to Bonneville Dam - In the gorge boat anglers averaged slightly better than a legal kept per every 3 rods while bank anglers averaged one per every 6. Boat anglers between Kalama and Camas/Washougal were also catching some legals.

Walleye

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Boat anglers in the Camas/Washougal area averaged a walleye per rod.

Trout

Battle Ground Lake - Planted with 792 rainbows averaging nearly 1.5 pounds each and 528 weighing 2.5 pounds each October 5.
