Steelhead
- Based on counts through September 25, the TAC upgraded Group
A and Group B steelhead run sizes to 258,400 Group A (including 65,600
wild) and 53,300 Group B (including 10,800 wild) for a total of 311,700
summer steelhead passing Bonneville Dam.
Fall chinook
- TAC also updated the fall chinook river mouth run size to
391,100 adults, including 208,300 Upriver Brights. Lower Columbia hatchery
fall chinook returns to date are lower than preseason projections, however
most hatcheries are expected to make their broodstock goals.
Early stock
coho - Bonneville Dam counts through September 25 total 59,400
adult coho. Early coho passage at Bonneville Dam is typically 91% complete
by September 25.
Commercial coho
landings have been within catch expectations, and hatchery returns are
varied, but appear to be on track.
Toutle River
- Bank anglers are catching fall chinook and some coho and
steelhead.
Cowlitz River - Bank and boat anglers are catching
a mixture of fall chinook, coho, steelhead, and sea run cutthroats.
During the past
week Tacoma Power and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
recovered 634 fall chinook adults, 28 fall chinook jacks, 648 adult
coho salmon, 66 coho jacks, 91 summer-run steelhead, 38 adult spring
chinook salmon, one jack and six cutthroat trout at the Cowlitz Salmon
Hatchery separator during five days of operations.
Tacoma Power employees
released 225 coho adults, 27 coho jacks and three spring chinook adults
into the Cowlitz River at the Franklin Bridge site in Packwood, Washington.
In addition, they released 240 coho adults, 22 coho jacks, eight spring
chinook adults and one jack into the Cipsus River above the mouth of
Yellowjacket Creek during the week.
A total of 116 coho
adults, seven coho jacks, two cutthroat trout, 178 fall chinook adults
and 20 jacks were released into Mayfield Lake at Ike Kinswa Park boat
launch.
Also during the
week a total of 54 steelhead adults were recycled downstream to the
Massey Bar boat launch, while 64 steelhead adults and one cutthroat
were recycled downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch. Three cutthroat
were released into the upper Cowlitz River basin.
River flows at Mayfield
Dam are approximately 3,350 cubic feet per second on Tuesday, September
26. Flows are scheduled to be increased to 3,500 on Sunday, October
1. Water visibility is 14 feet.
Lewis River
- Bank anglers are mainly catching coho while boat anglers
are mainly catching chinook around the salmon hatchery.
Washougal
River - Fall chinook are present but none was found in the
sample.
Wind River
- Boat anglers are catching some coho.
Drano Lake
and the White Salmon River - Anglers are mainly catching steelhead
along with some fall chinook and coho.
Lower Columbia
below Bonneville Dam - Anglers were catching some coho along
with several fall chinook that had to be released.
