Area 5 and 6 Chinook Selective Fishery
Less than 500 chinook remain on Areas 5 and 6 Chinook Selective Fishery quota.
Less than 500 marked hatchery chinook remain on the Areas 5 and 6 Chinook Selective Fishery catch quota. From July 1st through Sunday, August 1st, over 24,000 anglers have fished for salmon in the chinook Selective Fishing area in Areas 5 and 6. Preliminary estimates show that they kept an estimated 3,040 marked hatchery chinook and 6,002 marked hatchery coho. That leaves 460 marked hatchery chinook still available from the original quota of 3,500 marked hatchery chinook. During the past week, anglers have kept an average of about 90 hatchery chinook per day. Most of the chinook kept, 2,474, were caught in Area 5, while only 566 have been caught in Area 6. However, the catch of hatchery chinook has improved in Area 6 during the past 2 weeks.
WDFW managers will be keeping a close eye on the catch of chinook. Before fishing anglers should be sure to check the WDFW hotline or website to ensure that the chinook fishery has not been closed prior to the August 10th date in the pamphlet. The next update will be issued on Thursday, August 5th.
