REMINDER-Quileute SMA

The Quileute SMA will open to state fishers May 1, 2009 according to the following provisions

The special management area (SMA) is described as marine waters east of a line approximating the 30-fathom line from 47º58.00’ N. (Cape Johnson), south to 47º40.50’ N. (Destruction Island), described as the marine waters within the following points:

  • Northeast Corner; Cape Johnson - 47º58.00’N.
  • Northwest Corner; 4758.00’ - 124º49.00’W.
  • Southwest Corner; 4740.50’ - 12440.00’W.
  • Southeast Corner; Destruction Island - 4740.50’N.

Effective 12:01 AM May 1, 2009 through 12:00 PM May 31, 2009, the Quileute SMA will open subject to the following restrictions: a vessel may use, maintain, operate, or control no more than 100 pots within the Quileute SMA.

Any individual that intends to fish within this SMA during the May 1-May 31, 2009 time period must notify the Department 48 hours in advance of setting any gear. This notice must include the following information: name of person controlling the gear; vessel name; the amount of gear being deployed; and the buoy brand identification data. This notice must be given by one of the following three means:

1. Fax transmission to Brandon Bryant at: 360-664-0689;
2. E-mail to: Brandon.Bryant@dfw.wa.gov; or
3. Telephone call to: Brandon Bryant at 360-249-4628, Extension 229.

Further, if an individual has provided the Department with a notice of intent to set gear and later decides not to deploy gear, a notice to that affect should be given by one of the three means listed above.

As of 12:01 AM on June 1, 2009 the Quileute SMA will be open with no limits on the number of crab pots fished.
