In response to a poor return of Fraser River sockeye salmon in 2007 and the subsequent cancellation of commercial sockeye fisheries, the federal government has approved disaster relief funding for Washington.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) announcement of the disaster assistance funding is available on the NOAA website.
At the request of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) has agreed to implement the disaster relief program for non-treaty commercial fishermen affected by the disaster.
Details of the disaster relief program, developed in cooperation with WDFW, are available at http://www.psmfc.org/.
Puget Sound commercial salmon license holders who meet the criteria outlined on the PSMFC website should contact WDFW’s licensing department at (360) 902-2464 or licensing@dfw.wa.gov to make sure their contact information is correct.
