Environmental Restoration Technical Assistance: ERTA East and ERTA West

ERTA includes two sections:

  • ERTA East (primarily serving Eastern Washington)
specializes in surface water diversion screening and Eastern Washington fish passage inventories, habitat assessment and habitat projects.

  • ERTA West (primarily serving Western Washington)
specializes in fish passage, fishways, fish passage barrier and screening inventories, habitat assessment and Western Washington salmonid habitat projects.

Formerly Known as the Salmonid Screening Habitat Enhancement and Restoration (SSHEAR) Section, the staff of the ERTA sections (East and West) conduct statewide inventories to identify fish passage barriers, unscreened or inadequately screened water diversions and to locate opportunities for salmonid habitat restoration and enhancement. Additionally, ERTA trains inventory partners in use of fish passage assessment protocols and screening protocols. This fish passage and screening information is stored in the Fish Passage and Diversion Screening Inventory (FPDSI) Database, which is available for use within the agency and by the public. Data from the FPDSI is incorporated into the Salmon and Steelhead Habitat Inventory and Assessment Program (SSHIAP) and Salmonscape Internet map application.

Biologists within ERTA-East and ERTA-West identify habitat enhancement/ restoration opportunities, provide technical assistance to others, develop and implement habitat projects that benefit wild salmonids.

Additionally, ERTA staff provides technical assistance and training to Federal, State and Local Governments, Tribal nations, Lead Entities, Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups, Citizens, Private Industry, and Others interested in Habitat Enhancement/ Restoration, Stream Habitat Assessment, Fish Passage and Screening Assessment, and Diversion Screens and Fishways Inspection and Maintenance.
