About Vehicle Use Permit

The Grouse Flats Wildlife Area is 640 acres in size, and is located in Garfield County about 70 miles southwest of the town of Clarkston. Elevations range from 3,600 feet to 4,160 feet. Vegetation types are fir/ninebark on the north and east aspects, while south and west aspects include pine/pinegrass communities. Elk use the area and feed on the 200 acres of hay fields. With minimal human disturbance and no competition from livestock for forage, elk use has dramatically increased. The area also supports white-tailed deer, mule deer, bear, cougar, and a wide variety of small mammals and birds. Upland game birds include blue and ruffed grouse, and more recently, wild turkey.
