The LeClerc Creek Wildlife Area is located in Pend Orielle
County along the east side of the Pend Orielle River, about 25 miles northwest
of Newport and about 65 miles northwest of Spokane.
The elevation in the vicinity varies from 2,000 feet along the river to more
than 3,500 feet on higher ridges. Habitat types present include open fields,
riparian zones, brushy thickets, and both open-canopy and closed-canopy mixed
conifer forest. A checklist of wildlife identified on the area includes such
diverse bird species as bald eagles, nesting ospreys, Coopers hawks, white-headed
and Lewis' woodpeckers, whistling swans, common loons, and blue and spruce grouse.
Mammals include elk, mule and white-tailed deer, both grizzly and black bear,
cougar, coyote, mink, badger, otter and several other furbearers, as well as
several species of chipmunk, squirrel, marmot, mice, voles, shrews, and numerous
bats. The area has a relatively full complement of snakes, and frogs, with a
toad, skink, and turtle species as well. Historically the river has provided
a spiny ray fishery and populations of eastern brook trout.

Highway 211, go 16 miles to State Highway 20, then north on State Highway 20, go 15
