About Vehicle Use Permit

The LeClerc Creek Wildlife Area is located in Pend Orielle County along the east side of the Pend Orielle River, about 25 miles northwest of Newport and about 65 miles northwest of Spokane.

The elevation in the vicinity varies from 2,000 feet along the river to more than 3,500 feet on higher ridges. Habitat types present include open fields, riparian zones, brushy thickets, and both open-canopy and closed-canopy mixed conifer forest. A checklist of wildlife identified on the area includes such diverse bird species as bald eagles, nesting ospreys, Coopers hawks, white-headed and Lewis' woodpeckers, whistling swans, common loons, and blue and spruce grouse. Mammals include elk, mule and white-tailed deer, both grizzly and black bear, cougar, coyote, mink, badger, otter and several other furbearers, as well as several species of chipmunk, squirrel, marmot, mice, voles, shrews, and numerous bats. The area has a relatively full complement of snakes, and frogs, with a toad, skink, and turtle species as well. Historically the river has provided a spiny ray fishery and populations of eastern brook trout.
