About Vehicle Use Permit

The St. Helens Wildlife Area includes over 2500 acres of land on the Toutle River debris slide west of Mt. St. Helens. The area has been seeded to grasses and legumes which attracted elk to the area almost immediately. The herd has since grown and become a tourist attraction in itself. The open meadow area is easily viewed from the newly-opened SR 504 that leads to the USFS Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center. Elk can be seen from several vista points on a daily basis throughout the year. Peak use by more than 500 elk occurs during the winter months. Calving and rearing of young takes place both on and adjacent to the unit.
