DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT
RP REPORTED THAT AROUND 0130 SHE AND HER HUSBAND WERE AWOKEN TO THE SOUNDS OF LOUD GROWLING/ROARING AND WENT OUTSIDE TO SEE A COUGAR ATTACKING THEIR RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK DOG AND TRYING TO DRAG IT OUT OF THE YARD BY THE HEAD. THE HUSBAND YELLED AT THE COUGAR AND THE DOG EVENTUALLY CAME RUNNING BACK TO THE HOUSE WITH SEVERE INJURIES TO THE FACE AND HEAD. THEY TOOK THE DOG TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY AND THE DOG ENDED UP BEING EUTHANIZED. UPON RETURNING FROM THE VET AROUND 0330, THEY HEARD A COMMOTION AND SAW THAT A COUGAR WAS CHASING THE NEIGHBOR'S DOGS. THE COUGAR WAS RUN OFF BEFORE HARMING ANY OF THESE DOGS. AROUND 0530, A FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFICER AND THREE HOUND HANDLERS ARRIVED BUT WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE COUGAR. A SECOND FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFICER RESPONDED, INVESTIGATED, AND CONFIRMED THE COUGAR ATTACK. AROUND 0855 THIS OFFICER HEARD FROM A SECOND RP THAT HER GERMAN SHEPARD HAD BEEN ATTACKED AROUND 2130 HOURS THE PREVIOUS EVENING. RP LIVES ABOUT 1/2 MILE AWAY, OVER THE RIDGE, ON BRENDER CANYON RD. THE DOG HAD PUNCTURE WOUNDS TO THE SIDE OF ITS HEAD AND NEAR THE SHOULDER. THESE INJURIES ARE CONSISTENT WITH A COUGAR ATTACK AND LIKELY RELATED TO THE FIRST INCIDENT DESCRIBED. A DEPREDATION PERMIT WAS ISSUED TO REMOVE THE PROBLEM COUGAR. NO COUGARS WERE KILLED ON THE PERMIT.
