This region offers many splendid resources including a large elk population, many fine steelhead streams and one of the only wild fall Chinook salmon runs in the state.

This southwest corner contains the state's only active volcano, Mount Saint Helens. Also located here are the only active sandhill crane nests and the last western pond turtles in the state. Other varied habitats in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area support a unique grouping of rare and potentially endangered species, such as western gray squirrel, peregrine falcon, pileated woodpecker and steelhead trout.
