Chronic wasting disease surveillance

Species concerned: Deer and elk.

Investigator: Kristin Mansfield DVM, Science Division, Wildlife Program.

Purpose of research: Conduct surveillance for Chronic Wasting Disease in native free-ranging deer and elk through examination of hunter-killed, road-killed, and sick-appearing animals.

Geographic area: Entire state.

Timeframe of study: This is the third year of intensive hunter harvest surveillance. Extension of hunter-harvest surveillance beyond 2004 will depend on available state and federal funding.

Joint partners: United States Department of Agriculture.

Funding: Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife; United States Department of Agriculture.
