Research
Habitat variables of importance to salmon and steelhead

Species concerned: Chinook, coho, chum, pink and sockeye salmon, steelhead, and bull trout.

Investigators: Kirk Krueger and Marnie Tyler, Habitat Science Team.

Purpose of research: To identify habitat variables having the greatest impact on salmon and steelhead population performance. This research will guide data development efforts within the Habitat Science Division's Salmon and Steelhead Habitat Inventory and Assessment Program (SSHIAP). This work will also be used to identify knowledge gaps that will guide future research. Data collected and generated by SSHIAP are used in salmon recovery and subbasin planning and implementation, Ecoregional Conservation Assessment, Growth Management Act planning, and coarse scale research conducted by a variety of organizations.

Geographic area: Statewide.

Timeframe of study: 2004-2005.

Joint partners: None at present. As this work evolves, WDFW scientists will coordinate with SSHIAP co-managers the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, and will seek to engage researchers at Washington Department of Ecology, Washington Department of Natural Resources, University of Washington, National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration Fisheries, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, and others.

Funding: Funds for this work are derived solely from WDFW state general funds at this time.

Are volunteers needed: Not needed at this phase of the project.
