Western gray squirrel movements and nest use in the North Cascades

Species concerned: Western gray squirrel (state-listed threatened species).

Lead Investigator: Matt Vander Haegen, Science Division, Wildlife Program.

Purpose of research: To examine movements and seasonal nest use of this northern-most population of western gray squirrel in the North Cascades. Also, to survey historic sites and search for new nesting colonies.

Geographic area: North Cascades.

Timeframe of study: 2003 to 2004.

Joint partners: University of Washington and the USDA Forest Service.

Funding: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through the State Wildlife Grants program.

Are volunteers needed: Volunteers are needed to assist with weekly radio-tracking of collared squirrels. To respond, please contact Research Scientist Matt Vander Haegen at (360) 902-2516.
