Salmon Restoration Leaders Needed The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is now accepting applications from citizens interested in salmon recovery to serve on a board that oversees the state's Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group (RFEG) program.
Two volunteer board positions - one representing commercial fishing and one at-large - are currently open on the eight-member advisory board. The department encourages candidates from eastern Washington to apply to ensure the board represents broad geographic interests.
"Serving on the board is a great opportunity to build a stronger relationship between watershed-based citizen groups and the department in our shared mission of rebuilding salmon runs throughout our great state," said WDFW Deputy Director Larry Peck.
The RFEG program was created by the state Legislature in 1990 to involve local communities, citizen volunteers, and landowners in the state's salmon recovery efforts. Fourteen groups, 11 in western Washington and three in eastern Washington, are dedicated to restoring salmon and steelhead populations by working with state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, and local businesses and landowners.
The advisory board meets quarterly throughout the state to review and approve projects for salmon recovery proposed by the RFEGs. Travel reimbursement and per diem expenses are available, but board members do not receive direct compensation.
The three-year terms begin when filled. The commercial-fishing position ends December 31, 2008. The at-large position expires December 31, 2009.
