To: director@dfw.wa.gov From: Cheryl Price Date: 07/20/2006 Subject: Officer helps in a stranded situation
We wanted you to know how much we appreciated the help from one of your officers, G. A. Grant, from Wenatchee. My husband and I, our son, and granddaughter were on our way to vacation at a house on Fish Lake for our granddaughter’s birthday. On Monday, July 17th, we were 15 miles north of Leavenworth on Highway 2 when my white Chevy truck broke down. We barely got the truck on the shoulder in a very dangerous curve. We tried everything and could not get the truck started. We were 7 miles from the lake, and at least 4 miles from the nearest phone, and my cell phone was out of coverage. It was very hot, and we were in a state of panic because we had our granddaughter, and my husband and I are disabled. For almost an hour, cars were flying by and no one stopped to check on us, or even offered to help. I prayed and knew two of us would need to start walking to get to help. Just as we got out of the truck, Officer Grant appeared from around the corner. He was definitely the answer to our prayers. He immediately pulled behind us to protect us from any possibility of oncoming traffic. He checked all of us, and offered to take one of us back to Leavenworth or even Wenatchee to get help. He also offered to use his radio to try and locate help, or to take me to a phone. We have AAA, so he drove me to 4 miles to the nearest cell service, and we were able to arrange for a tow truck. It would take an hour for the truck to get to us, so he drove me the 4 miles back to the vehicle. He offered to take the other members to Leavenworth, while I waited for the tow truck, to get them out of the weather. We had plenty of supplies and water, and decided to stay together and wait for the tow truck. We did not have flares or warning signals, and were dangerously close to a blind curve, so he even helped us push the truck further away from the curve. He would not leave until we reassured him that the AAA tow truck would be here soon, and we had plenty of water and food. He went well beyond his duties as a Fish and Wildlife Officer, and as a decent gentleman. He was definitely the answer to our prayers that day, and we just want him to know how much his kindness touched us. The tow truck driver was kind enough to get us to the house at the lake, and the mechanic had our truck fixed in one day. So, our trip was blessed, and everything worked out very well. If Officer Grant had not stopped and went above and beyond his duty, we could have been killed from ongoing rapid traffic, or been stranded for a very long time. Please forward this to Officer Grant to let him know how very much we appreciated everything he did for us. He was the answer to our prayers, and our granddaughter has told everyone how we were saved by the officer. We are sending a personal thank you note in his name addressed to the WDFG Region II office in Ephrata with a request to forward. I could not find an address in Wenatchee. We want him to know how much his kindness meant, and if he is ever in Yakima, he is more than welcome in our home. Thank you. Cheryl Price, Bob Row, Eli Mundell, and Andrea Mundell
