The EagleCam Story
An Update From "Down Under"
(Excerpts sorted by date)

Letters and Feedback

Seldom do we get a chance to appreciate the results of our efforts to help fish and wildlife in Washington. But the camera on an eagle nest in Kent, and the extreme cooperation of the landowners, has given us an insight into what some of our public thinks about wildlife and this camera in particular.

The following are a sampling of the comments that "EagleLady" and "Wildthing" have received from appreciative viewers of the eagle nest. Numerous questions about the eagles prompted the landowners, Garry and Lorraine, to write weekly updates.

Great job! Its the best thing I've seen online. Your journal entries are interesting and informative. Thank you very much! We live 2 miles north of Highway 18 and six miles west of the summit of Tiger Mountain. We love the wildlife and do what we can to preserve natural habitats. It means a lot to us. Keep up the good work!

Sincerely, Doug and Nancy Smith

You're back!! The cameras are in great position. Thank you again for your
running commentary and for hosting us all in your back yard. I look forward
to getting to know another eagle family.

Welcome back!

Dear Garry and Loraine,

I can't thank you enough for this wonderful opportunity to see these eagles in real time. What a treat.I find myself sitting here just awestruck.I can't wait for the babies.I'm 61 years old and feel like a child watching them.I'm from Vermont, way across the country and yet here I am watching your eagles.Don't you just love technology?

Sincerely, Barbara

I just have to tell you how much I love watching the eagle cam. I am disabled and love nature and animals...Thank you ..

Barb

Your site is the most incredibly beautiful site on the internet!!!!!!!!!!

I'm 58 yrs old and as excited by this as a 9 year old! Thank you all very much!

Michael M.

I was sent your link by a friend who ran across it somehow... I've been sending it all over AEI Music and some friends throughout the UW faculty.

It's absolutely wonderful - of course the images are great but the conversational writing style is particularly enjoyable. Thank you for putting so much time into this endeavor. (I have personalized plates - had no idea where the money went!)

Sometime you might visit the north/northeast area of Beacon Hill - we have resident eagles (somewhere) around the area... I've seen as many as 6 at one time soaring in updrafts over I-5 and International District immediately to my north/northeast. Andrew

I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed watching the eagle family. Those babies are getting SO BIG now! You have a rare gift there and I'm so

grateful that you've decided to share it with the rest of us. It's my belief that being personally aware of our wildlife gives we humans a little more care and compassion for them and helps us to take ownership for the part we can play. I not only have enjoyed the camera, but loved the "Down Under" message and learned so much from it! It is really helping me as I watch those babies grow on a daily basis. What an exciting event!

Thanks again for sharing! Ro K.

Just want to say thanks so much for the site. I look several times each day and have my friends and grandchildren looking too. We talk about this all the time. I love this new feature re the background with additional pictures. We have a pair of eagles in our area but don't know where the nest is located. Thanks again for photos and information.

Hi, I am enjoying the Eagle Cam shots and your comments. What a wonderful resource My company provides an e-mail lesson service for 4th and 5th grade teachers. On the encouragement of a relative who lives in Seattle, we suggested the Eagle Cam site to all of the teachers and home school parents on our subscriber list. Many tell us that referring them to your site is one of the best things we have done for their students. It's a popular classroom and homeschool record keeping and natural science activity. If you would like to see some issues of the Daily Duck, let me know. It probably won't be of much interest to you (you already know about Daniel Boone, Frank Lloyd Wright, the Invention of the Safety Pin and other subjects of interest to the 9,10 and 11 year old set) but it is just one more vehicle that is helping to spread the word about the Eagle Cam resource. By the way, the first babe is a month old tomorrow! Happy Birthday to little Fuzzy!

Thanks, Jean Y. Director, The Daily Duck

I THINK WE NEED MORE OF THIS SORT OF THING. I THANK YOU. I HAVE SENT IT

TOO FRIENDS AS FAR AS SOUTH CAROLINA. WHAT KIND OF TREE ARE THEY IN, AND HOW FAR OFF THE GROUND ? THANX AGAIN .SP

HOW ABOUT SOME WOLVES OR COYOTES

I am so impressed with these eagles, I have just moved to Washington three month's ago and I have not seen one yet but I set and watch your video every single day. This is just beautiful thank you for having such a beautiful sight...

Thank-you so much for the lovely website!! I visit often, several times a day! I saw the babies for the first time on Mothers Day! What a special treat on Mothers Day!! I love to see them; I told my brother bt e-mail, who lives in Jamaica to check it out.

Thanks again, Love, Cathy.

The eagle cam site is WONDERFUL!! Thank you for making it available. Can you tell me if we are able to view the falcon nest in Seattle? I know viewing in available in the lobby of the building where the nest if located.

Wow what a terrific site! I love watching the eagles. Please don't move the cam away until the babies are flying on their own. Watching Mom and Dad teach them should be fascinating. I'm sending my donation now. Thanks,

Juliann J. Orlando, FL

I have been watching this site since yesterday! It is great! Are there baby eagles in the nest? However did someone get there without disturbing the nesting sight? Thank you for making something possible I would never otherwise see. Keep up the good work!!

Shan

I work at the downtown library, and have been recommending this page to everyone in earshot. It's absolutely amazing! Out of curiosity, what brand of webcam are you using, and where did you buy it?

Watching baby eagles getting their breakfast even as we speak.

Hello EGLLADY,

The children have been wondering if the daddy eagle is the sole provider for his family during the day or weather he took turns with mommy to go and get food? I am not sure of the answer and thought i would see if you had an answer before going to research eagles further. We enjoyed your quick response from our last question and thank you again for providing this chance for us to see the family grow up. The children are constantly asking to check on them. Thank you.

Nana

I just want to say I think your allowing this eaglecam to take place is very generous and interesting and exciting!

Thank you, Thank you. This is the best thing on the Internet. We have nesting Eagles within telescope range from our house on Hood Canal, but this is even a better view. Thanks, I'll pass this Web site on to others. PS I do have a personal license.

Robin G.

Hi, thanks, this is a great sight and I have added it to my favorite places.

Patti

I really think that the EagleCam is wonderful. How nice it is that you were able to get a camera angle that allows us to see the eagle chicks in the nest and the male eagle watching in the background. I hope to be able to check in each day to see how things are going. Thanks!

Stan Briggs, Trenton, Michigan

The Kent eagles in the nest web-enabled-video pictures are absolutely fantastic. This gives us, the public, an opportunity to view something totally in the wild. I have sent this website to many on my e-mail list. As the owner of two personalized license plates, I am pleased to see the money going to this program. Keep up the good work.

Eileen

Hi........This is one of the neatest things I've ever seen! I have sent this address to many of my friends and family members and they are all now referring to the eagles as "their eagles". Friends and family can not only see the eagles who live just 200 yds. out my bedroom window, but see what our weather is too. It's just the best! I hope we can continue to watch "our eagles" for a good long while! Who ever came up with this idea-----THANKS!

Barb T.

What a wonderful idea! Is the eagle sitting on eggs or is there a baby or two in the nest? I have been watching a few days now and haven't seen one yet. I live in Florida and it is awesome to be watching a Washington state eagle. Who would have thought we could ever do this. Gotta love our gadgets. Great country this America. Thanks for the birdseye view.

Dianne

Hello,

I just found your Eagle-Cam site and think it is just great. I emailed a link to all my friends. The location of the camera is excellent. While the female is in the nest, the male can be seen in the background keeping watch over the nest.

I was at the City of Bellevues's Osprey cam and was very disappointed. The quality of their web-cam, is very poor to the point of not being able to even see the birds.

I think it would be great to see more different types of wild-cam sites. How about a cam of some sort in a bear or perhaps raccoon den?

Keep up the good work and I hope to see more Wild-cams in the future.

Geoff C.

WOW! What a wonderful way to start the morning! I received the site from a co-worker and was absolutely awe-struck! My check will be in the mail by weeks end. If possible, I would like to receive more info. re:personalized license plates. thanks again for a wonderful opportunity to help wildlife! Ever consider putting a camera under water where Salmon are spawning? Just a thought! Have a great day!

Mary H.

Thank you for bringing us the live pictures to watch. Today I was viewing and at about 10:04, Thurs. May 11, 2000 caught a beautiful view of one of the eagles landing in the nest with wings spread. Great shot! Then saw the baby- did not realize until today that they were not sitting on the egg. Thank you.

Wendy W., Tacoma

I really like this web page and I have sent it to as many people as I can think of! I would love to make a donation when I have some extra cash, in the mean time I do have a suggestion. It would be nice if there were some additional information about this pair of birds - do you know how old they are? When the babies hatched? I haven't seen any chicks and my husband and I are in a debate over whether they have actually hatched. Keep up the good work.

Jacqueline Z.

I would like to know the best time to view activity in the nest, especially feeding time and approximate time of the chicks first flight attempt. Any posted information of chick development and care taking as it happens would be fun to read as I follow this miracle. I live within a half mile of the nest and have enjoyed these eagles for as many years as they have been here.

Thanks to everyone who has made this possible. It is a shame we couldn't stop the new housing development on 144th that will surely take away wonders like this.

Sincerely, Patty J.

Hi. I have sent this all over the country. Everyone loves watching it. I am curious, did the second egg hatch and if not could it still hatch? All I can see is one baby.

Thanks, Yvonne

This is a really great site! I was wondering..how can you tell the male eagle from the female? Do you know which one is which? One is darker than the other, but they both look much the same. Thank you for the info, and keep up the good work!

Jody

Coming from Seminole County Florida, which has a large concentration of eagles, I want to commend you on this web site - it is enthralling and very addictive. Have a few questions: 1. What is the power source of the camera and what contingency plans, if any, are in place in case of a camera failure? 2. When specifically did the eaglets hatch and are there only 2 in the clutch? 3. Do they fledge in about 4 months, and how long until fully flighted? Thanks (I raise parrots!)

I want to thank you so much for this eagle site. We live on Lake Meridian and watch these eagles hunt in front of our homes almost every day. I have listed your site in our newsletter. Watching the eaglets like this is truly a treat. Will there be a way of knowing where the eaglets choose to make their homes? I have thought about purchasing a personalized license plate for a long time, but this will make me go in and do it now! Thank you again!

Michelle M.

What a nice job with the camcorder. I am throughly enjoying watching the eagles several times a day. Thank you for the education.

Hello

Since finding out about the eagles nest on 05/10/00 my daycare children have started to monitor this wonderful event. Please we would like to know when the eaglets hatched? We are trying to keep a simple journal for later referance. We also cannot tell for sure how many eaglets are in the nest. Thank you, Nanasaurus Nestlings fledglings

Provider Virginia F.

This is the greatest thing that has ever happened. I can't quit watching and thank you so very much. I have only seen one baby since last evening the 11th. How many are there? Do both parents hunt and feed? Thanks again,

Thanks so much for the chance to watch these magnificent birds go about their day to day, or 5 second to 5 second, lives in full view of those who choose to watch.

I cannot quite tell how many chicks are in the nest, although it looks like there are two. Can you verify the number?

Dianna M.

I am 71 years young, and I have four married children and 8 grandchildren, and all of them are watching the eagles, your eagles, they love it too, and sent the site to alot of other friends also, and they all love it, thanks again so much for sharing with us, this is a something I never dreamed in my entire life I would see something as beautiful and as exciting as this, I envy you being so near them, but by the pc and electronics, and wires, and cameras, now everyone else can share in this wonderful site, thanks again, let me know If I am missing the site with the sign up book and the picture, thanks.

Thanks and I know you probably have tons of questions... I have one las tone.. how far away is the camera and are you able to work on it if needed with out disturbing the eaglets? BTW - this eaglecam is by far the best on the web - most of them require manual refresh, but this one is almost like watching a continuous movie. I have checked out all of the cameras from zoos and the discovery channel, but this one is by far the best. Regards and thanks for the enjoyment. It makes me ALMOST want to move to Washington... at least you are not having wildfires!

I heard about your Cam site from the "Digital Goddess"..... and followed the link on her news letter. I've shared the site with fellow employees in the City of Downey, CA. It is enjoyed by all. Thank you very much for the time and attention you've shown the Eagles. Thank you also for the FAQ's.

Ronald L.

I cannot put into words how much I have enjoyed the Eagles ! I am a great admirer of these magnificent birds, as is my husband. He is an avid collector of eagle figurines and our home is full of them. We hope to be able to make a contribution to your cause before too long. You're doing a great thing! Keep up the great work!

Hello from Ocean Shores! We have an eagle nest about 2 miles up the road from me but your view is better. How do you get anything else done? <G>

What has impressed me all along as I check in on the nest each day is the amount of time the male also spends within sight of the camera. I had no idea he would be such a presence as the "kids" grow up, other than providing food of course. He hangs around a lot and I find that very endearing.

Anyway, I am very glad to have the privilage of watching these kids grow; I hope both make it out of the nest. Keep those messages coming; they are enjoyed by all. Thanks....

Dianna M.

My granddaughter sent me this site and I watch the eagles some every day. Have always loved wildlife and saw the eagles in Alaska. At 85 this gives me a chance to enjoy them again. Keep up the good work and thank you.

I wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed watching these youngsters grow. Thank you and thank the land owners for making this possible. I am from Colorado and would love to see something like this in our area. Congratulations on the great work and I am looking forward to seeing a new clutch of young eagles next year.

Hello. My name is Betty J. and I live in Tacoma, Wa. I have really enjoyed watching this nest and all the different stages but I now am really feeling the empty nest syndrome. I babysit my 2 year old granddaughter during the school year (days only ... whewww) and often she would come to me and take my hand to see the "egoes" ... we would keep it on as much as we could while she was here.

The reason I am writing is to tell you a story of how I got so interested in Eagle watching. My parents lived on a small lake near Shelton, Wa,. Fawn Lake. For years my husband, myself and my parents would spend hours around the fire pit talking, telling jokes etc. My mom passed away 5-1/2 years ago, but long before that we would all search the skies for the elusive bald eagle that would do a fly by while looking for fish.

In the more recent years one became two and last summer we knew there where 2 pairs that lived close by ... we saw all 4 at one time ... it was absolutely magnificent. Then we noticed one that hadn't turned white yet so we knew there was a young one. In May I told my father about the eagle cam and how all we could see was a little ball of fluff ... he was now to weak to even get out of his chair to see them fly into the nearby trees. He was very happy and fascinated to hear about the eagle cam ... and how technology could bring me such happiness to be able to actually watch the babies hatch and grow.

On May 13th he asked all his kids to come to "the Lake" so he could say good-bye ... it was time he said. I spent that night with him letting other family members go home and get sleep so we could start the round-the-clock care for him. That night it was just him and me alone for 5 hours in the still of the night, we spent those hours talking, settling those little things and sharing stories. He asked how the babies were doing and I told him all that I knew, he said "I wish I could see the Eagles one last time." He passed away on May 16th. I am not sharing this for sympathy, as I feel blessed to have had those hours with him ... we held his service on May 21st at his home, and at his request spread his ashes in the water. As the family gathered on the beach a single Eagle flew over the middle of the lake and rested in a tree next door, watching what was going on. Each family member went out onto the dock, said their good-bye and released a balloon. All the while the Eagle stayed in the tree watching. My sister, brother and myself reserved 2 balloons, took them out onto the dock to release them for our mom and dad, together. As we did this the Eagle cried out very loud and swooped down right over head and made a circle around us and then with another cry he flew off again. When this happened, I smiled and said "there he is Dad, one last time for you". I am sure that he was curious to see if we were fishing, but I want to think that he was there to also say good-bye to Dad. I know Dad would have loved that.

I have been meaning to write to you before this but as you know, there was a huge lump in my throat and I would say "I'll do it another day." Now that the babies have left, I really feel a sadness but look forward to seeing the nest again if that is possible.

Thank you for allowing all of us to join in the treasure of watching those precious birds. By the way, I know my friend from New Jersey has written to you, Colleen aka Momms, she has been fascinated by these babies and also checks out the weather we are having. She even got to see how dark it got during the solar eclipse last week, so thank you again.

Betty J.
