Are Bald Eagles Still Protected?
In July 2007, Bald eagles were removed from threatened status under the Federal Endangered Species Act. However, the ESA requires continued monitoring of bald eagle populations for five years following delisting. The WDFW will assist in this effort.

Bald eagles have been listed as “Threatened” in Washington State since 1978. Following the federal delisting, WDFW is expected to recommend to the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission that the bald eagle be downlisted to “Sensitive” status. Bald eagles and their habitat will continue to be protected by other state and federal laws.
