Species of Concern
Peregrine Falcon
Falco peregrinus

Peregrine Falcons are recovering from dangerously low numbers. One successful recovery technique is called hacking. This method involves releasing young falcons at hack sites in suitable, unoccupied habitat. The young falcons become acquainted with their sites and return to them when ready to breed. This broadens the species' distribution and improves its chances for recovery.

Protecting nest sites and monitoring the peregrine population are high priorities for the Department. The efforts have been worthwhile, as the population has grown from four pairs in 1980 to 37 pairs in 1996.
