Species of Concern
Snowy Plover
Charadrius alexandrinus

With a state population limited to just two areas and fewer than 10 nests per year, this sand-hued shorebird has required special management attention.

The snowy plover's preferred nesting habitat, barren coastal dunes, also attracts beachcombers and other recreational users. To protect plover nests, specific areas of high-quality habitat have been posted to restrict access. Recent plover nests usually have been found in these protected areas.

Future activities will likely include vegetation management. Beachgrasses planted to stabilize dune systems have encroached on the open areas required by nesting snowy plovers. Removal of exotic grasses from habitat formerly occupied by plovers should allow new pairs to nest.

The Washington State Recovery Plan for the Snowy Plover was completed in 1995. Call (360) 902-2515 to request a copy.
